Sonder sy hulp sou ek hierdie uitgawe, veral deel I, nie in so 'n beknopte tyd kon versorg het nie. My opregte dank ook aan mnr. K.S.D. Deel II IX Preface The completion of volume II of the Valentyn edition marks the conclusion, at long last, of a labour started by the late Prof. Serton as long ago as 1957. As final editor it was my task to shoulder the well-nigh disastrous Valentyn publication, gather together the hundreds of loose threads left by my predecessors and to round off the annotations and further editorial work. As so many editors had worked on the text, it was not always possible to clear up certain small obscurities, and in at least one case an important correction was overlooked. Prof. Serton had completed the introduction to the publication in 1963, and it was included practically unaltered. In his description of Valentyn's map of the Cape he criticises as mistaken the view of Prof. V.S. Forbes who regarded the map as a copy of Kolbe's maps (see VRS II-2, p. 22). However, Prof. Forbes had already corrected his error in an article in the Tydskrif vir Aardrykskunde (Stellenbosch), April 1965, no. 6, p. 12, 13, also in his book Pioneer Travellers of South Africa, 1965, p. 39, and in the Standard Encyclopedia of Southern Africa, volume III, p. 110. Not being a geographer, these corrections slipped my notice, but I should like to avail myself of this opportunity to rectify the matter as yet. In his Description Valentyn mentions many persons, places and farms of the early Cape which might be of importance to historical research. For that reason it seemed desirable to compile a fairly exhaustive index of persons and places mentioned in the two volumes so as to facilitate reference. I am indebted to Mr. Roy Pheiffer of the University of Cape Town, who translated all Major Raven-Hart's footnotes from English into Afrikaans. He also helped with the proof-reading of volume I and was of assistance by word and deed in many ways. Without his help I would not have been able to produce this publication, especially volume I, in such a limited time. My sincere thanks also to Mr. K.S.D. Beavon of the Department of Geography of the University of the Witwatersrand for his co-operation, and especially to Mrs. L.R. Thatcher, cartographer in the same Department, for the clear sketch-map of Starrenburg's journey which she drew for this edition. Finally a word of thanks to Miss Cristina Mazurkiewicz for her assistance with the reading of printer's proofs and the compiling of the index. (Vgl. voetnoot IV/13 in VRV II-2.) [S] 4. Sien VRV II-2, bl. 190, voetn. III/8. Deel II 3 Chapter four (Continued) Journey of Landdrost Starrenburg in the year 1705 Since 1670, and also before that date, journeys were made by the Serjeants Kruidhofs and Cruse, persons well acquainted with the country here, to the Mossel Bay and to St. Heleens Bay.1 Also in recent years, under Heer Willem Adriaan van der Stel, Corporal Samuel Paske2 made an inland journey of 80 miles with 8 or 10 soldiers and 50 Hottentots, to the Zwarte River, chiefly to search for runaway slaves, of whom he caught 4. They were away for 6 weeks, finding everywhere a Company's Post, a Company's House, a Company's Salt Pan,3 and the necessary utensils for cooking their food.

  • History of the Overberg and Southern Cape Forests (Pre-Modern History to 1795)
History of the Overberg and southern Cape Forests (pre-modern history to 1795) By Ryno Joubert Email: [email protected] (2019) 1 Pre-modern history The Outeniqua region was inhabited by the Khoi (Hottentots) and San (Bushmen), collectively known as Khoisan, who lived off the land for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The San were semi-nomadic hunter-gatherers. They occasionally visited the forests, but did not dwell in or exploit them. Groups of San hunters occasionally smoked animals out of the forests during hunts, and this could have been the cause of some forest fires in the past which possibly contributed to the fragmentation of the forests. The Khoi people were pastoralists and frequently burned the veld to obtain grazing for their cattle. The coastal plains and forests teemed with wildlife, including large numbers of elephants and buffalo. Khoisan hunters had a small impact on the wildlife due to their small numbers and primitive weapons. When the Europeans arrived, the clans gradually disintegrated, and ended up in the employment of farmers. The densely forested Tsitsikamma region further to the east remained sparsely inhabited until the late nineteenth century. A thinly scattered Khoi population known as Strandlopers (Beachcombers) lived in caves along the rugged coast (Van der Merwe, 2002). 1630-1795 The first known Europeans to inhabit the area were a group of Portuguese seamen that were stranded in Plettenberg Bay (then known as Bahia Formosa) when their ship the Sao Goncalo was wrecked in 1630. The survivors lived in the Piesang Valley for 8 months, and were the first Europeans on record to cut wood from the southern Cape forests.

After discussing the problems of researching western European music history in South Africa from the arrival of the Dutch in 1652, and briefly summarising that music history up to the first clarinet reference, the thesis goes through the existing clarinet references. These have been sourced from travellers’ journals, newspapers, military histories, other theses, etc., with particular emphasis on the 19th century, since the clarinet was introduced to South Africa near the beginning of it, and the most unknown part of the clarinet’s South African history is within it.
