Massive thanks for his love, his support, his eagle-eyed proofreading and his unerring faith in me. 4 Abstract In recent years, debates about new work in the English theatre sector have often centred on a perceived divide between so-called ‘text-based’ and ‘non-text-based’ work. This thesis offers a fresh perspective on this debate, arguing that this division rests on a misrepresentation of the relationship between text and performance embodied in, and perpetuated by, (a) the structures of Arts Council funding, (b) higher education and (c) theatre criticism. As such, I argue that the division between ‘text-based’ and ‘non-text-based’ work is not a straightforward reflection of divergent theatre-making practices; rather, it has been shaped by these theoretical and institutional contexts. Chapter One makes an original intervention in theoretical discussions about text and performance, showing that there remains something conceptually unresolved about the ontology of the playtext. I argue against any hierarchy of text and performance, proposing that each is supplemental to the other, in a Derridean sense, thus endlessly deferring authority. I also reposition the notion of artistic intentions, which I suggest are indeterminate, multiple and embedded in creative processes. With this theoretical framework in place, Chapter Two draws on extensive research in the Arts Council archive to argue that an 5 effort to support new playwriting, paired with an erratic approach to the funding of alternative theatre, created a division between different kinds of new work. In Chapter Three, I analyse how an opposition between text and performance has frequently been used to define Drama as a discipline in higher education, while Chapter Four identifies conventions in mainstream theatre criticism that have perpetuated a hierarchical understanding of plays and performances. On one side – depending on the preferred terminology – is ‘new writing’ or ‘text- based theatre’; pitted against it is ‘new work’, ‘devised theatre’ or ‘non-text-based theatre’. Throughout the twenty-first century, this oppositional vocabulary has permeated opinion articles, theatre reviews, conferences, panel discussions, and academic books and articles.1 Concurrently, and contrastingly, theatre practice itself has increasingly confounded simple divisions on the basis of text. The proliferation of new forms – interactive, immersive, site-specific, one- to-one, among others – renders a two-pronged understanding of English theatre insufficient, while the sustained drive towards collaborations of various kinds continues to blur the already porous boundaries between practices of writing and devising. As Deirdre Heddon and Jane Milling assert, ‘any simple binary opposition of devising to script work is not supported by the briefest survey of the actual practice of companies who choose to devise’ (6). In early post-war years, Britons anachronistically hold the myth of the long Edwardian summer and thus reconnect with peace after the Great Wars. Unfortunately, though, the repressed memories of Wars haunt the writings and the aura of the age. That’s why in Wesker’s accounts, especially in his early corpus, Wars work double shift reminding us the hopes of the new generation and their disillusionment after the failure of the Labour. With this background in mind, our study tries to enlarge the theme of communist idealism and disappointment contested in Wesker’s Chicken Soup with Barley. In this play, an angry young man through and through and a representative playwright of the first wave in post-war British drama, Arnold Wesker poignantly shows how politics works as an imperative upon the private and the personal and it is also the sexual politics that Wesker contests and subverts. These two issues further serve for his handling of ethnicity (Anglo-Jewry), class (proletariat) and gender (binary opposition). Our aim with this Neighbourhood Plan is to promote Hampstead’s future as a lively and contemporary neighbourhood with exceptional heritage and unique open spaces. Over the course of 2014, the Forum consulted extensively with residents, businesses and other stakeholders in Hampstead. We appeared at festivals, met with groups and individuals, got out the word through our website and the local media and managed to increase our membership from about 150 to more than 1000. Several hundred people attended our three consultation events. We listened to your feedback and worked hard to incorporate your views into a “Vision” document. The excellent response helped us establish a clear set of aims and objectives for how the local community would like to shape future development. During 2015 and 2016, we sought to put some policy flesh on these visionary bones, or rather, some teeth. We also spent many months gathering the evidence to back up these policies. We presented our draft Neighourhood Plan for consultation in the spring of 2017 and received overwhelming support for the policies it contained.     An Investigation into How Engagement with the Context and Processes of Collaborative Devising Affects the Praxis of the Playwright: A Practice-as-Research PhD Volume 2 223 Practice-As-Research: The 9.21 to Shrub Hill (Devised Production) Playground (Non-Devised Production) and Accompanying Exegesis 224 Chapter Five Exegesis of the Processes of Creating a Devised Script (The 9.21 to Shrub Hill) and Non-Devised Script (Playground) Introduction The preceding chapters have created a framework for the analysis of my own experiences as a writer-deviser. Without this framework, it would be difficult to situate my practice within a theoretical context, since a similar academic discourse, placing the writer-deviser at the heart of the study, does not exist. As highlighted in the Introduction, the central query of this dissertation is how engagement with devising affects a playwright. This is a query with important ramifications for pedagogical practice and the discourses of devising and playwriting in general, but also represents a significant investigation in the development of my own artistic practice. As previously discussed, my methodological approach encompasses both research-led practice, and practice-led research.1 The preceding chapters have informed the development of the two scripts contained within this volume, and the development of the two scripts directed the focus of my research. As with most PaR investigations, the findings resulting from the practice share equal weighting (if not, in the case of some researchers, more) with those discoveries made from traditional, text-based research methodologies. Whilst I explore the ramifications of devising practice on my writing, I am also placing it within the context of the previous chapters’ revelations, finding resonances with the work of other writer-devisers, and testing out the theories presented of both devising and writing in my own work.
