I hope members have settled well into Term 1, whether that be in their school from last year or in a new school. Welcome to our new EBE NSW members this year.

As a result of the elections held as part of the EBE NSW Annual General Meeting on 16th December 2019, the Board of Directors for 2019/2020 are:

Ms Sanija Hrncic from Keira High School was elected to fill a vacant director's position at an EBE NSW Board of Directors' Ordinary Meeting on 10 February 2020.

Ms Leith Thompson from Sydney Grammar School has resigned from the EBE NSW Board of Directors and I thank her for her contribution to the association.

The President’s Report to the 2019 EBE NSW AGM can be found here. The EBE NSW Financial Statements for the year ended 30 June 2019 were made available to members at the 2019 EBE NSW AGM and are available to members on request.

Thank you to all the above educators who will serve our members as EBE NSW Directors this year and advance quality teaching and learning through the association. We have a diverse Board with educators from government , Catholic, Christian and independent schools, as well as a teacher educator. Cheryl Brennan and myself also sit on the Board of the Directors of the Professional Teachers’ Council NSW (the coordination and consultancy body for professional teacher associations in NSW), of which we are a member organization. In addition Cheryl Brennan is President of The Australian Professional Teachers’ Association. This diversity enables EBE NSW to better serve the interests of all members and remain strategically focused as it carries out its activities and faces the challenges in the current educational environment. Directors are focused on achieving the goals in the EBE NSW Strategic Plan (2018 – 2020) which can be accessed on the EBE NSW website.

We wish these students and all the 2019 HSC Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies students all the best for the future and hope they will continue to build on the knowledge and skills they have gained through the Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies courses as local, national and global citizens and in their working lives.

How are your 2020 HSC students going? The half way mark will be here by the end of term 1. Give your students a competitive advantage by practising past EBE NSW trial HSC examination papers. Papers are available for Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies and come with marking criteria and suggested answers. The papers are written by EBE NSW Directors. There are discounts for EBE NSW members. Go to the EBE NSW website (“Publications”) for an order form. It is important students go beyond making their notes and learning their notes (important as this is) to applying their notes to examination type questions. Practice makes success. Have you renewed your EBE NSW membership for 2020?

Are you teaching the right Commerce syllabus to your Commerce students this year ?

A reminder that Commerce teachers need to be teaching the new NESA Commerce syllabus to Year 9 students and Stage 4 students this year. Teachers may continue to teach the old Commerce syllabus to Year 10 Commerce students who are continuing their study of Commerce from Year 9 last year or may choose to teach the new syllabus to Year 10 Conmerce students.

EBE NSW held the “Revamping and Resourcing Commerce for the New Syllabus” course on 6 December 2019 to familiarise teachers with the new NESA Commerce syllabus.Thank you to the conference convenors, EBE NSW Directors Roset Khair and Carolyn Muir and all the presenters. The event was very successful with positive feedback from teachers, helping them to increase student learning outcomes as they implement the new NESA Commerce syllabus this year in their Commerce classes. Are you in a rural area and have professional learning needs?

EBE NSW rural members who would like EBE NSW directors to consider travelling to their area to conduct professional development courses in relation to Economics, Business Studies, Legal Studies and/or Commerce are encouraged to contact the association. EBE NSW has a history of conducting many professional development courses for teachers in rural areas.

Reserve Bank of Australia 2020 Teacher Immersion Event

The Reserve Bank's fourth Teacher Immersion Event will be held on Friday, 19 June 2020 at the Reserve Bank of Australia Head Office (65 Martin Place, Sydney).This free event provides an excellent opportunity for secondary school Economics teachers from across Australia to expand their knowledge of current economic issues and deepen their understanding of economic concepts. The event is also an opportunity for teachers to engage in professional discussions with their peers and practicing economists, including the Bank's Ambassadors.

Rural members, please note that a limited number of rooms have been reserved for attendees from regional New South Wales to stay at the Bank's H.C. Coombs Centre (a small fee applies).

Reserve Bank of Australia Topical Talk - Demographics, Consumption and Income

Registrations are now open for the next Reserve Bank of Australia Topical Talk - Demographics, Consumption and Income.

Kate McLoughlin (Senior Economist, Economic Analysis) will discuss trends in household income and consumption over the past decade. The presentation will examine these trends from the perspective of different age cohorts and discuss how the aging of the population may have affected aggregate household consumption and income.

2020 applications for marking and/or judging the 2020 NESA HSC Economics, Business Studies and Legal Studies examinations open on 5 March 2020 and close on 19 March 2020.

HSC marking and judging are valuable professional learning experiences and experienced and beginning HSC teachers are encouraged to apply.
