LINER NOTES Martin Pahinui Ho'olohe One of Hawaiian music‘s most gifted vocalists, John Martin Pahinui has performed with a host of top performers, including his father‘s legendary Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band, The Peter Moon Band, The Pahinui Brothers, Nina Kealiçiwahamana, Bill Kaiwa and slack key super group Hui Aloha (with slack key guitarists George Kuo and Dennis Kamakahi). The youngest child of Gabby Pahinui (1921-1980) and Emily Pahinui, Martin grew up surrounded by music— not only the amazing kï höçalu (slack key) in his family home but also the many other styles floating on the wind in Waimänalo, where he grew up and still lives. Like many children of famous musicians, Martin is keenly aware of a double responsibility: to honor his family‘s musical legacy and to always be himself. ―My daddy is a very big influence on all of us,‖ Martin says, ―but he always did things his own way, and he taught us to trust our own instincts too. He loved Hawaiian music but he wasn‘t afraid to change something if he felt it was the right thing to do. Some people would grumble, but he‘d say, ‗So what, some people grumble no matter what you do.‘ He always said to respect the song and the composer and the people who taught you, but never be afraid to express your own feelings when you play.‖ Recently, when the local rap group Sudden Rush asked the Pahinui family for their blessings to use a recording of Gabby‘s classic rendition of Hiçilawe, Martin supported them. -

1. Thanksgiving 4:06 Inspired by friends and places of Miles City, Montana. 2. Rest Your Head 2:38 An Appalachian carol from the late nineteenth century. Collected by the eminent folklorist John Jacob Niles, (1892-1980). 3. Joy 3:14 By J.S. Bach, originally titled Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, and inspired by an arrangement by guitarist David Qualey, from his album, GUITAR SOLO (Telefunken Records 6.23413 – German import). 4. Prelude 1:16 Inspired by jazz pianist Vince Guaraldi (1928-1976). Vince Guaraldi was best known for his piece, Cast Your Fate to the Wind, which he composed and recorded in 1962, and for his soundtracks for the first sixteen of the Peanuts® animations - from the first one in 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas (Fantasy Records), to the last episode he scored, It’s Arbor Day Charlie Brown, recorded just before he passed away in 1976. I have recorded two albums of his compositions: LINUS & LUCY–THE MUSIC OF VINCE GUARALDI, VOL 1 and LOVE WILL COME–THE MUSIC OF VINCE GUARALDI, VOL 2 (Dancing Cat Records). 5. I also have played Phil’s composition Hill 57, which will be on his upcoming release THE BIG OPEN. Phil’s other Montana themed recordings, UPRIGHT, LIVE FROM MONTANA, FIELD NOTES, and his solo piano album of movie themes, CINEMA, and all of his wonderful music have also been very inspirational to me. -

BEAUTIFUL NOISE Directions in Electronic Music www.ele-mental.org/beautifulnoise/ A WORK IN PROGRESS (3rd rev., Oct 2003) Comments to [email protected] 1 A Few Antecedents The Age of Inventions The 1800s produce a whole series of inventions that set the stage for the creation of electronic music, including the telegraph (1839), the telephone (1876), the phonograph (1877), and many others. Many of the early electronic instruments come about by accident: Elisha Gray’s ‘musical telegraph’ (1876) is an extension of his research into telephone technology; William Du Bois Duddell’s ‘singing arc’ (1899) is an accidental discovery made from the sounds of electric street lights. “The musical telegraph” Elisha Gray’s interesting instrument, 1876 The Telharmonium Thaddeus Cahill's telharmonium (aka the dynamophone) is the most important of the early electronic instruments. Its first public performance is given in Massachusetts in 1906. It is later moved to NYC in the hopes of providing soothing electronic music to area homes, restaurants, and theatres. However, the enormous size, cost, and weight of the instrument (it weighed 200 tons and occupied an entire warehouse), not to mention its interference of local phone service, ensure the telharmonium’s swift demise. Telharmonic Hall No recordings of the instrument survive, but some of Cahill’s 200-ton experiment in canned music, ca. 1910 its principles are later incorporated into the Hammond organ. More importantly, Cahill’s idea of ‘canned music,’ later taken up by Muzak in the 1960s and more recent cable-style systems, is now an inescapable feature of the contemporary landscape. -

This, in order to develop the acoustic guitar as a fully-fledged solo instrument, rather than its more typical role of accompanying instrument. Before Hedges, there were already several acoustic guitarists who challenged the convention that the steel-string acoustic guitar’s primary function is that of an instrument for accompaniment. John Fahey, Leo Kottke, Will Ackerman and Preston Reed were the most prominent guitarists to try to validate the steel-string acoustic guitar as a solo instrument. They all had their own unique idiosyncratic approach within this self- proclaimed mandate, but none had the disruptive impact that Hedges had, and still has. Today, this new acoustic guitar movement – often described as Fingerstyle or Percussive Guitar – is larger and more popular than ever. -
