Egentligen var den som öppnade frågan professor Abel Lefranc (1863-1952), en av Frankrikes främsta inom litteraturvetenskapen, som i en bok kallad "Bakom Shakespeares mask" efter ett livsverk av seriösa forskningar lanserade en ny teori om den verklige mannen bakom namnet William Shakespeare. Hans namn var minsann William, men efternamnet var ett helt annat än det i England som Olsson och Eriksson i Sverige då lika vanliga namnet Shakespeare (även Shakspere, Shagsbeard, Shaxpier, etc). Man kommer ju inte ifrån, att skådespelaren William Shakespeare från Stratford, som bara var en enkel ofrälse, som nödgades gifta sig med en åtta år äldre fru för att han gjort henne med barn, som flydde från henne till London för att inleda sin teaterkarriär som hästvaktare utanför teatern, som aldrig lämnade England och som tidigt drog sig tillbaka för att dö bara 51-årig, efter att ha testamenterat bara sin nästbästa säng till sitt gamla rivjärn till änka, är svår att sätta i samband med 36 högtravande skådespel som genomgående vittnar om högadlig förtrogenhet med kungar och hertigar, internationell beresthet och expertkunskap om förhållanden till sjöss, i krig och i så fjärran länder som Turkiet (Bosporen), Danmark (Kronborgs slott), Italien, Grekland och Orienten. Med sitt pionjärarbete 1918 inledde professor Abel Lefranc en lavin av nya spekulationer om vem den verklige William Shakespeare kunde ha varit, men de flesta av dessa spekulationer ledde i regel bara fram till, att eftersom Shakespeare inte kunnat vara Edmund Spenser, inte Francis Bacon, inte Christopher Marlowe, inte Thomas Kyd eller en hel drös av andra berömliga elisabetanska kandidater, så förblev det ändå troligast att William Shakespeare helt enkelt hade varit William Shakespeare. Väldigt få tog därmed fasta på professor Abel Lefrancs intressanta vinkar, men några få gjorde det. Det var framför allt A.W.Titherley 1952 i "Shakespeares identitet" och Carl O. Nordling i "Hamlets hemlighet" från 1995. Dessa har arbetat vidare på professor Abel Lefrancs teorier och styrkt dem. Dessa går ut på, att den som skrev under Shakespeares namn var ingen mindre än William Stanley, den sjätte earlen av Derby, ättling till Henrik VIII:s romantiska lillasyster Mary Tudor, med både Anne Boleyn, drottning Elisabet, Maria Stuart och kung James I som kusiner i olika led. Han var alltså närbesläktad med det engelska kungahuset och kunde själv ha blivit kung efter Elisabet, om han hade velat. Men han skrev "Hamlet" i stället, som var hans förklaring varför. Carl O. Nordling från Borgå styrker dessa teorier med ett överväldigande övertygande indiciematerial. Till de tyngsta argumenten hör pseudonymen Shakespeares språkbruk, som i sina dialektala ingredienser är övervägande nordengelskt från trakterna Derbyshire, Yorkshire och Lancastershire, William Stanleys hemtrakter, som William Shakespeare aldrig kom i närheten av. Talrika pjäser vittnar om internationell expertkunskap utomlands, som William Stanley måste ha omfattat genom sina vidlyftiga resor, medan Stratfordskådespelaren aldrig kom utanför sitt hemlands dörr. Scener i "Hamlet" vittnar om intim kunskap om förhållanden vid kung Fredrik II:s hov på Kronborgs slott (invigt 1585) där William Stanley vistades, då han troligen skrev den tyska "Ur-Hamlet" som uppfördes vid invigningen med honom själv troligen i en av rollerna, den dilettantiska pjäs på dålig skoltyska ur vilken senare de engelska versionerna utvecklades. Dessa är bara några argumentexempel. Denna tes öppnar emellertid en hel värld av nya intressanta spörsmål, av vilka alla måste röra sig kring frågan vem denne märklige excentriske högaristokrat, som hellre skrev pjäser än tog hand om den engelska kronan, i så fall egentligen var. Mysteriet 4 William Shakespeare blir därmed större och mera oöverskådligt och outrannsakligt än någonsin. Vår enda vägledning är egentligen de få bristfälliga fakta vi har om William Stanleys liv samt William Shakespeares 36 fullbordade pjäser. Av dessa två källor framstår den senare som den mera upplysande. Man kan ju numera med ganska stor säkerhet fastställa den kronologiska ordningen på Shakespearepjäserna. Till de första hör de passionerade krönikespelen om engelsk medeltidshistoria — Lancastersviterna — som vittnar om ett glödande historiskt intresse och ett djupt engagemang i just huset Lancasters sak, som William Stanley själv tillhörde. Ett brinnande intresse i italienska förhållanden och dess mentalitet kommer fram i de tidiga italienska komedierna och framför allt i tragedin "Romeo och Julia".     The Other W.S., William Stanley, Sixth Earl of Derby John Raithel n the following, I hope to provide a reasonable summary of the evidence I that I believe points to William Stan- ley, the sixth earl of Derby, as the author of the works generally attributed to Shake- speare. I do not intend, of course, to pre- sent all the material here, but do hope to give a reasonable history of the Derbyite conviction, and in so doing point to some of the sources, compilers, and interpreters of this information, and then bring it up to date with recent discoveries and publica- tions. Beginning with the referenced works, I believe the interested reader will find much to flesh-out the skeleton sketched here. There are good reasons for suspecting that the traditional assignation of the authorship of Shakespeare’s works is misplaced. These are based on statements made about the works at the time of their appearance, evidence concerning the traditional candidate, and inferences derived from the works themselves. There are also good reasons for suspecting the true author to be William Stanley, the sixth earl of Derby. Some of these, too, are based on statements made about the author of the works, and inferences derived from the works themselves. And some are based on evidence concerning William Stanley. None of the statements, evidence, or inferences is conclusive—for Stanley or anyone else—or there would be no controversy. The case for Derby is made by examining the available material and attempting to weight it appropriately, assigning, for example, less weight to inferences drawn from the plays by a Derbyite—where there must be a natural bias toward interpreting the evidence in support of Derby—and more weight to a contemporary’s comments about the author, or to modern research by a non-Derbyite scholar.

Goulding tells us that he had this from "one of his (Shakespeare's) intimate Acquaintance." 1769 - Publication of The Life and Adventures of Common Sense, an anonymous allegory which describes a profligate Shakespeare casting "his Eye upon a common place Book, in which was contained, an Infinite Variety of Modes and Forms, to express all the different Sentiments of the human Mind, together with Rules for their Combinations and Connections upon every Subject or Occasion that might Occur in Dramatic Writing..." 1785 - James Wilmot, attributed authorship to Sir Francis Bacon, Lord Verulam. 1786 - The Story of the Learned Pig, an anonymous allegory by an "Officer of the Royal Navy," in which The Pig describes himself as having variously been a greyhound, deer, bear and a human being (after taking possession of a body) who worked as horseholder at a playhouse where he met the "Immortal Shakespeare" who's he reports didn't "run his country for deer-stealing" and didn't father the various plays, Hamlet, Othello, As You Like It, The Tempest , and Midsummer's Night Dream.

It is now merely symptomatic of a larger social malaise and belongs in a history of sociology, advertising, or conspiracy theories, not literary scholarship. The history of this Oxfordian sub-movement, since it is primarily a story of concepts derived from obsessive literary metaphor and personal emotion, must be told through the lives of its progenitors, as it has no other real life. Oxfordian critics have always maintained that the life becomes the work. And the lives of the original Tudor Rose proponents, Capt. B. M. Ward (son of Col. B. R. Ward), Percy Allen, and Dorothy Ogbum, explain their work on Tudor Rose theory, though both their writings and their lives offer us many finer hours. As these hours are too frequentiy unrecorded, the present author places himself in the difficult position of suddenly interjecting as defense counsel, while indicting friends to whom he owes much. We are scholars here, hopefully, dealing with documentary evidence, but documents are only part of the story that we will never see completely. Anyone is free to reject the memorial portion of this article. They do not affect the thrust of the argument. Capt. Ward was a very brave man and his published work is of a high standard, while the Tudor Rose theory was merely a private Freudian abena- tion.

THOMAS LOONEY (1920) By Kevin Gilvary On 04 March 1920, a quiet schoolmaster called J. Thomas Looney published a seminal study entitled “Shakespeare” Identified in Edward de Vere the Seventeenth Earl of Oxford. This work established the theory that the Earl of Oxford was the concealed poet and playwright of the works of Shakespeare. To mark this centenary, The de Vere Society is devoting this issue of its quarterly newsletter to our founding father. Life John Thomas Looney (pictured here in his wedding portrait) was born in 1870 to a Methodist family in South Shields, an industrial town near the mouth of the River Tyne. It lies about five miles downstream of Newcastle-upon- Tyne. At the age of sixteen, he attended the Chester Diocesan Training College, with a view to becoming a minister. After several years of study, he changed vocation and trained as a teacher there. The Principal at the time was the Rev. J. D.
