It is expected that all students attend school every day as many skills that is needed for the following years at the College continue to be taught inMother each & lesson. Son Dance Students are expected to be in full summer uniform and in sports uniform on Thursdays.

We have had some several events in the last few weeks at the College that have demonstrated the excellent work being done and the representation of student and staff at various community events.

REMEMBRANCE DAY

The College held a Remembrance Service on the 11th November 2019 on the College grounds. The service was a reverent and beautifully presented event that included many students and teachers participating. The students organised the grounds and stage as well as participated in the readings and played and sang in the band during the event.

The whole event was coordinated by members of staff who put much effort to make the service a very respectful event.

ARCHBISHOP’S FORUM

We had four of our senior students and Mrs Montuoro represent the College at the Archbishop’s Forum. The event allowed selected students from Catholic schools to meet and discuss issues with His Grace Archbishop Anthony Fisher. Students had the opportunity to share with the Archbishop their ideas about how the Church could best accompany them.

NEWMAN SYMPOSIUM

This was a spectacular evening, the students who presented were so enthusiastic that they often had the audience in awe or in fits of laughter. They showcased their amazing talents in many ways.

Lead by Mr Cartledge and Mr Stonefield, students, parents, special guests and staff enjoyed the night tremendously. Well done to the Newman classes.

ST JOHN VIANNEY SWIMMING CARNIVAL

Some of our Year 10 students studying PASS along with Mr Daher assisted in supervising, helping out and participating in the St John Vianney Swimming Carnival. It was a great day and our students as well as the primary students enjoyed themselves.

YEAR 7 INFORMATION NIGHT

Following the Symposium was the 2020 Year 7 Information night. The night was well organised and many staff, junior and senior students from the College gave of their time to show the 2020 Year 7 students around the College.

Parents were informed of some of the God bless, challenges but exciting aspects of high school. Jizella Akkari Acting Assistant

YEAR 7 2020 TRANSITION DAYS

We had one of our major Transition Days at the College this week (next Thursday is our second day) for all our 2020 Year 7 students. We also had a smaller transition Day for our Diverse Learning students during the week.

Both days focussed on helping the students become familiar with our general procedures, grounds, facilities and general understanding of how high school operates.

The students went to various lessons and learnt about all the subjects they will be studying and enjoyed the experience of being in science labs and specialist rooms such as the music and art rooms.

Welcome to our Year 7 2020 students!

LASALLIAN ENCOUNTER DAY

On Monday 18th November, fourteen of our Year 11 students attended the Annual ‘Lasallian Encounter Day’ held at De La Salle College, Cronulla. The Annual Encounter Day aims to bring Young Lasallians from across our NSW schools together for a day of leadership and faith development in a spirit of fun and community.

The day was a great success and involved our students getting to know other Lasallian students from across in the spirit of the Lasallian pillar of Community. Our students engaged in the day with great spirit and represented the College well.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY CHRISTMAS APPEAL

This year, the College will again be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society Annual Christmas Appeal. It is part of the De La Salle tradition to be of service to others in our community.

Christmas is a time of great joy and celebration. However, for some, it is a difficult time, especially for families in need. The generosity of our donations give these families hope and spreads the blessing and warmth of Christmas.

We are asking students to donate specific items which can be put towards making Christmas hampers for families in our community who are struggling at this time. We are asking families to donate the more traditional ‘Christmas Day’ type of foods.

When donating items, please remember to give only items which you would want (and not items which you would like to get rid of).

St Vincent de Paul Society - Christmas Appeal Items

Christmas Cake Shortbread Packets of Jelly Pasta and Sauce Chips

Christmas Pudding Lollies Chocolates Canned Fruit Noodles

Christmas Decorations Custard Jams Biscuits Tea & Coffee

Please send these items via your son’s homeroom by Tuesday 9th December. The items will be collected by St Vincent De Paul representatives at the end of week 9. 5 www.lasalle.nsw.edu.au COMMITMENT · CONFIDENCE · SUCCESS

NEWS FROM NEWMAN SELECTIVE COORDINATOR - MR PETER CARTLEDGE

NEWMAN SYMPOSIUM Mother & Son Dance Last week Year 7 students from the College's inaugural class of Newman students celebrated the year's worth of learning at our first ever Newman Symposium.

Students worked collaboratively to plan, rehearse and present 40 minutes of presentations and skits that shared highlights from the year with parents and guests. Segments included an informative presentation on how to read and write binary code, a delightful skit in which students interviewed important historical figures, and a touching TED Talk on the value of personal storytelling. Parents and guests were then treated to a learning walk hosted by Newman students that covered the five Newman Stream subjects: Catholic Studies, English, HSIE, Science and Mathematics.

I would like to thank the many parents, friends and staff who attended the evening to support our Newman students. I would also like to thank and acknowledge our special guests Mrs Teresita Borthwick and Mrs Penina Barry from Sydney Catholic Schools, and Mrs Monica Palmer, Principal of St Mary's Catholic Primary School, George's Hall.

YEAR 10 TECH SAVVY PROGRAM

This year, students from Year 10 were given the opportunity to volunteer to visit Bankstown City Library to help elderly citizens with troubles they may be having using their devices and surely enough many students were quite eager to stand up and help out. On Wednesday mornings, the students would sit down to support those who attended by teaching them how to do things such as navigating their phones, downloading apps, searching the internet, making phone calls and so much more.

This experience gave many Year 10 students a chance to understand some of the struggles older people may be having with tasks that are simply second nature to many of us today. Some of the students who attended say that it was “a fun experience” and that they “enjoyed the free coffee and biscuits”. The program was overall enlightening and many of us believe that we have empowered such people in our community by allowing them to navigate their devices. by Haiden Sleiman

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR MARGARET CROUCHER

ENGLISH INCURSION: JAN FRAN FROM THE FEED SBS

Last Friday, 15th November, enrichment classes from Year 9 and 10 had the great opportunity to listen to Australian journalist and presenter, Jeanette Francis ''Jan Fran" regarding media and manipulation. Jan enlightened us about how our developing generations and technology have changed over time and really brought to our attention the effects of what can be accessed in the media.

We had the privilege to ask her questions regarding her journalist experiences and we were able to gain primary knowledge on someone who witnesses different social current affairs and reports on them. Jan gave us insight into how the media doesn't expose the full story and can use words to manipulate stories. We found this extremely fascinating and it will make us rethink when reading articles and news on the media in the future.

We greatly appreciate Jan for giving us her time and being so friendly, relatable and engaging. Thank you. Jessica Calligas 10ENGS

YEAR 10 ENGLISH EXCURSION: LINK PROJECT SYDNEY UNIVERSITY

On Wednesday, 13th November, the students from the Year 10 Solomon English class travelled to Sydney University for a Creative Writing Workshop. At this event we were enlightened about creative writing and university life, specifically regarding English courses.

Completing various activities regarding poetry in lecture and tutorial-style formats and going on a tour around the university was an enriching experience as it allowed students to further their understanding and interest in university life. The workshops helped students craft a new perspective on poetry and how memories are the catalyst for creating impactful and engaging texts.

Thank you to Mr Cartledge for organising this exciting opportunity for the class as it will assist us in preparing for Stage 6 English.

Additional thank you to Miss Bou-Simon and Miss Hung for accompanying and assisting on the day. Thank you.

YEAR 10 SOCIAL: Mr John Jacobs

As a result of a previous request to the Executive by representatives of the student body, many of Year 10 students gathered on the 15th November to celebrate, through dance, a real sense of community.

Our Lasallian ladies and gentlemen of Year 10 arrived at St Felix's hall, looking rather splendid and with a spirit of cooperation and a sense of fun. They danced the night away with energy befitting their youth. At the end of the evening, our students were kind enough to say that it was a fun and memora- ble night.

It is with great gratitude that I extend my thanks to the Executive, Mrs Anne Saliba and the teachers who supported the initiative by their presence.

As always, We are LaSalle and proud to be!

CONFERENCE IN WELLINGTON, NEW ZEALAND: MRS MARGARET CROUCHER - OUR LAB TECHNICIAN

During the last school holidays, our Mrs Croucher, attended the three day conference for Lab Technicians at St Patrick’s College in Wellington NZ.

“Workshops for Biology, Physics and Chemistry were very interesting and gave us new ideas for pracs in each subject area. Three keynote speakers spoke about continental and oceanic crusts and Zealandia, the challenges of living and working in the Antarctic environment and using exotic laser pulses to study how matter converts into light and more useful forms of energy.

The highlights for me were 2 offsite excursions to the famous WETA workshop where we had a guided tour and were shown the practical effects crafted for Lord of the Rings, King Kong, The Chronicles of Narnia, Avatar and many other movies.

We learned how to make fake blood with everyday items available from a supermarket and I was a volunteer to show how they do special effects of blood. Space Place’s dazzling full dome planetarium took us on an unforgettable journey from Wellington to the outer regions of our Solar System.

It featured a live exploration through the southern skies over New Zealand and explored how space technology is influencing life here on Earth.”
