Chapter 5: A Perfected Art: Church in the Late Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries

I. Josquin A. Introduction: Although a few of the we have studied were famous during their lifetimes (and for a while thereafter), no one achieved the “star” status of (ca. 1450–1521). 1. His reputation was legendary during his lifetime and continues to be so today. 2. Not only was his well known, but his personality also interested his contemporaries. 3. The printing of his works assisted in the spread of his popularity. 4. His works not only display the technical prowess one expects of the high style ca. 1500, but they also reflect humanist values in the lowering of style, as seen in clear textures, text-based forms, and declamation that allows the words to be properly understood. B. A Poet Born, Not Made 1. By the time Josquin died, music had moved from being considered part of the quadrivium to part of rhetoric. a. Music, in response to emerging attitudes toward humanism, could express ideas, emotions, etc. b. Compositions had to move the listeners, which is an idea that dates back centuries. 2. The theorist Glareanus is responsible for the Josquin legend, as related in his Dodecachordon (1547). a. Glareanus also added four modes to the traditional ones. b. He used works by Josquin to demonstrate these modes.

C. Josquin’s Career 1. Josquin began his career not far from where Du Fay had worked and died (Cambrai). 2. Early on, he also worked in Aix-en-Provence (the opposite end of from Cambrai) and for the Sforza family of . 3. In 1489 he went to to work for the papal chapel . a. Here Josquin’s career took off, and his music began to circulate (with the help of Petrucci’s publications). 4. Josquin was working for the Duke of (the d’Este family) by the time Petrucci’s volumes were printed. a. He beat out Henricus Isaac for this position. b. Josquin’s reputation as a won over the Duke of Ferrara, despite warnings against his personality and price. c. Josquin composed the Missa Hercules Dux Ferrariae in honor of the Duke. 1) This work features sogetto cavato (carved subject) to use the Duke’s name as the . 2) A later theorist, Zarlino, used the term sogetto cavato. 5. Josquin’s career ended in Conde.

D. A Model Masterpiece 1. Josquin’s Ave Maria … virgo serena demonstrates many elements of his compositional style. 2. Its influence was widespread, and as an example of “perfected art” it represents what many composers afterward sought to attain—it set the standard. a. Petrucci gave it pride of place (first) in his first motet collection. b. Many subsequence arrangements of the piece were made. 3. The text divides into three sections. a. E. Imitations 1. Several composers used Josquin’s Ave Maria … virgo serena as a springboard for their own compositions. a. ’s version (1537) expanded several aspects of the work, including number of voices, use of opening motto, and overall length. b. Antoine de Fevin, a French aristocrat, incorporated Josquin’s textural variety, resulting in this case in a Mass setting that seems to have no cantus firmus. 2. “Imitation,” or “,” Mass is the term scholars use to designate Masses that rework polyphony from pre-existing work.

F. Facts and Myths 1. Because Josquin’s Ave Maria … virgo serena encapsulates a new philosophy of composition, for many years scholars considered it a late work. 2. Recently, evidence surfaced that suggested it might date from early in the composer’s career. 3. Even though the Ave Maria … virgo serena seems to remove the need for a cantus firmus for polyphony, it is not the only type of piece Josquin wrote. Other compositions by the master use a cantus firmus.

G.. All Is Known 1. Sixteenth-century writers considered music an ars perfecta. a. Composers had reached perfection in the art, and everything one needed to know about composition was available to be known. b. Music needed rules so that those following would not have to rediscover perfection. These were provided by theorists. c. (1517–90) was chief among these theorists. 1) His Le istitutioni harmoniche (1558) consists of four volumes. 2) He recognizes the triad as a consonance, and notes the differences in aesthetic between major and minor triads. 3) Zarlino’s ranking of intervals reflects those in the overtone series, although he did not know about overtones.

H. The “Post-Josquin” Generation 1. Along with consonances, Zarlino described dissonances and their treatment. 2. Several notable composers followed in Josquin’s footsteps, and some were his pupils or pupils of pupils. a. b. c. Jacobus Clemens 1) Clemens wrote many works, including “metrical ” in Dutch. 2) Some of these settings juxtaposed psalm texts on popular songs (resulting in what is known as a “contrafactum”). 3) These were for home use.

I. Adrian Willaert 1. Willaert (ca. 1490–1562) was the last in a long line of Franco-Flemish composers to work in , at St. Mark’s in . a. His music circulated widely in print. b. The stylistic elements of Willaert’s compositions make him the prime example of established excellence. 1) Moderation, lack of idiosyncrasy, a measure of impersonalism 2) Balance, clarity, and refinement without density and conceit 3) Seamlessness, as seen in the motet Benedicta es, coelorum regina (1545)

II. Later Developments in Italy A. The New Instrumental Music 1. Willaert’s reputation as a perfecter of method enabled him to have many students.

2. One of his supposed pupils, (ca. 1515–65), succeeded him at St. Mark’s. His health did not allow him to remain in the position long. Italian students of Willaert continued his tradition of excellence in Venice, which became a major center of music study. 3. Jacques Buus (ca. 1500–65) also studied with Willaert. a. Buus was an organist at St. Mark’s. b. He contributed the “ricercare”—keyboard pieces that followed the same compositional aesthetics as Willaert’s . 1) This practice diverges from typical instrumental music of the period. 2) It is based on counterpoint, attempting to write for an instrument in the style of the polyphonic music of the day. 4. The architecture of St. Mark’s included two organ lofts, and the cathedral choir could be split between the two, resulting in a style of antiphonal performance known as cori spezzati (split ). a. Organists played from music, but also improvised.

B. Palestrina and the Ecumenical Tradition 1. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina (ca. 1525–94) and (1543–1623) continued in the ars perfecta tradition. 2. Tomas Luis de Victoria (1548–1611) and Orlando di Lasso (1532–94) were the last composers whose social status of an artist was defined solely in the institution of the . 3. Palestrina was essentially the musical spokesperson of the Catholic Church during the tumultuous years following the Protestant . a. He was the composer for eleven popes, from 1550 until his death. b. Naturally, Palestrina composed many Masses (at least 104). c. He also wrote around 400 motets, among other smaller works. d. He did compose (), but he was uneasy about them. 4. Palestrina sought to provide an ideal medium for the text. 5. His pursuit of perfection in so many Masses resulted in a facility in the style.

C. Continuing the Tradition 1. Most of Palestrina’s Mass settings are based on pre-existing material, as was typical of the period. a. Among his choices was the L’Homme arme. b. More than thirty Masses are paraphrase Masses.

D. Palestrina’s and the Bishops 1. During the mid-sixteenth-century, some Catholic church leaders saw the elaborate now in vogue as too much like secular music. They particularly noted difficulty in understanding the text.

a. In response to Pope Marcellus’ statement on intelligibility, Palestrina composed the Missa Papae Marcelli (published in 1567). b. This work achieved the ideals set out in the : The words are also clear and not overshadowed by compositional prowess. c. A legend has grown around this Mass, crediting it with saving sacred polyphonic music.

E. Freedom and Constraint 1. The Missa Papae Marcelli represents an enforced style—probably not something Palestrina would have composed if not for the extra-musical discussions surrounding the performance of the Mass during the mid-sixteenth century. a. There is no cantus firmus. b. The careful treatment of melodic line (especially control of leaps and dissonances) created a style of composition associated with Palestrina. c. Several parts of the Mass are homorhythmic, which allows for a clear expression of the text.

F. “Stairway to Parnassus” 1. Over time, Palestrina’s compositional style came to be seen as the prototype for “correct” writing. 2. In the eighteenth century, (1660–1741) wrote a treatise (Gradus ad Parnassum) in which he devised rules for counterpoint based on Palestrina’s music. a. These rules are still taught in classes today. b. The “steps” to Parnassus follow counterpoint of increased difficulty.

III. A. Alternatives to Perfection 1. As seen in the Eton Choir Book repertory, English aesthetics dictated a style that differed from that on the continent. 2. The music of (1490–1545, not to be confused with , a contemporary composer) continues in this tradition of very dense textures and melismas. 3. English music reflects a belief that music expresses something words cannot. 4. The music seeks to lift up the listener by overwhelming the senses.

B. The Recusant William Byrd 1. Byrd’s music is more personal than that of his English predecessors. 2. He wrote well in every genre, including instrumental ensemble and solo keyboard music (as well as sacred and secular vocal music). 3. England alternated between Catholic and Protestant during his lifetime, but Byrd remained Catholic.

C. The First English Cosmopolite 1. Continental music flooded into England during the sixteenth century. a. Alfonso Ferrabosco, of Bologna, moved to England in 1562. b. Byrd’s first printed motets demonstrate his affinity with Ferrabosco’s style. 2. The move to meant no more Masses as compositional vehicles. 3. As Byrd was in essence a Catholic composer, this dealt a severe blow to his career.

D. The Music of Defiance 1. As Byrd withdrew from established music (in the Anglican Church), he began to compose (and publish) works that demonstrate defiance. They are considered a form of protest and personal statement. 2. He published two books of Latin motets in 1589 and 1591. a. The texts are penitential. b. They are allegorical and suggest sentiments of the Catholics in England. 3. Byrd wrote three different settings of the Mass . a. They constitute the first Masses published in England (1593– 95). b. They are for three, four, and five voices. c. These works could only be performed in secret, as it was illegal to be Catholic. 4. Byrd published two volumes of settings of the Propers: Gradualia. a. The compact settings epitomize late-sixteenth-century ars perfecta. 5. Byrd’s Masses are without precedent in England, as decades passed without performances of the Mass Ordinary in England. a. He would not have known contemporary Mass settings from the continent. b. He based his Mass compositions on the style he had perfected in his motets. c. The Agnus Dei from the Masses for four and five voices illustrate Byrd’s approach. 1) The Mass for Four Voices is the earliest of the three Masses. a) Dissonance reaches its maximum intensity in a place where it is not usually encountered—in a text about peace. b) Byrd stresses the desire for peace, which Catholics in England did not have. 2) The Mass for Five Voices yields a very different interpretation than that for Four Voices. a) He allows the texture to increase with each statement of the text (three statements, three-four-five voices).

b) The emphasis is not on that which is absent (peace), but that which is given (mercy). 3) The third statement of the text requires the entire choir to call to the Lamb of God in homorhythmic outbursts. 6. These settings demonstrate Byrd’s very personal statement—ones made in a period in which it was dangerous to do so.

E. The Peak (and Limit) of Stylistic Refinement 1. Byrd represents an end of the ars perfecta as a living style: in the next period it is called . 2. Historical conditions outside music are part of the reason for this change. 3. Furthermore, how composers saw the relationship between music and text changes drastically around 1600.
