WARRAGUL HIRE & DRIVE BUS SERVICES TALENT MANAGERS REPORT This season Gippsland Power won 8 games, lost 10, and finished 7th on the ladder. Included in the losses were five 3 point margins and one 14-point margin. The results confirmed that our team was very competitive with the best in the competition. We were disappointed to lose our Elimination Final. The Club continues to successfully nurture Gippsland’s young football talent and we are delighted that two of our players were taken in the Nov. 24 AFL National Draft. There will be sizeable player turnover again in 2018 with 21 of last year’s squad of 40 moving on. This year, together was the introduction of the first Under 18 TAC Cup Gippsland Power Youth Girls program and is designed to integrate a U/18 girls TAC program on the same basis as the U/18 boys. The program has been set up to provide females with an elite pathway into the newly established AFL Women’s League. Our girl’s academy now boasts 40 of the most talented 13-18-year-old players from all over Gippsland. Although we are in our infancy, the development of our girls over a short period of time has been outstanding. I thank our 2017 fourth year TAC Cup coach Leigh Brown who once again did an outstanding job in coaching and preparing our players for the future. Leigh has a strong relationship with the boys and with all of our staff members and he expertly managed our list throughout the season. He also made a vital contribution in his fourth season in the Development Manager role. This year we also introduced Matt Ross to the role of High Performance Manager and Administration Assistant on Matt in a short time has had a huge impact on our operations. I am thankful for the contributions afforded by our TAC Cup assistant coaches; Scott McDougal, Rhett McLennan and Peter Mongta. A big thank-you also to our professional medical team led by Club Doctor Wayne Thompson, physiotherapist Tamika Fasoli and Scott Simpson, dietitian Rebecca Gallo, our head trainer Kevin Evans and trainers Kevin Curran, Kelsey Buxton, Mark Harasisiuk and Neil Whitelaw and our masseurs Mandy Ellis and Mazz Jones. I am additionally most grateful for the contributions from our rehabilitation advisor Sebastian Fontaine and chaplain David Hobbs. Gippsland Power’s match day staff are vital to the smooth running of our TAC Cup games and I gratefully acknowledge the roles of team manager’s Dylan Blyth and Brian Kinder, property steward Robbie Ross, runners Matt Ross and Alan Campbell, statisticians Bryan and Margaret Mitchell, social media officer Kate Mitchell, timekeeper Barbara Auldist, facilities Roger Knowles, electronic scoreboard attendant Malcolm Neal, gatekeeper Stan Morgan and umpires escort Peter Bates. Congratulations to Callum Porter who was named in the 2017 TAC Cup team of the year and also won the Gippsland Power Best & Fairest award. Gippsland Power’s Aiden Quigley, Cody Henness and Changkuoth Jiath played for Vic.Country in the NAB AFL National U/18 Championships series conducted in Victoria, South Australia and West Australia. Vic. Metro won the Div.1 Championships and were victorious in each each of their 4 games. Vic.Country beat the Allies in a Round 1. win in the series. Leo Connolly, Sam Flanders, Brock Smith, Mitchell Bentvelzen and Caleb Serong represented Gippsland power in the NAB AFL National U/16 championships, conducted on the Gold Coast. Sam Flanders and Caleb Serong were named All Australian from this carnival. The Gippsland Power U/16 & U/15 boy’s squads remain a vital element of our player development program. This season they respectively competed again in the Vic Country U/16 Championships at Morwell and Bendigo from March 25 to April 7 and the V/Line Cup U/15 Championships in the Latrobe Valley from Sept. 25 to Sept. 29. The U/16’s had a 2 win and a loss and finished 2nd to Bendigo. Our U/15 Div.1 team a win and a loss in their allotted games whilst Div.2 had a win and a loss. My thanks to U/16 coach Rhett McLennan and U/15 coaches Rob. Reid (Div.1) and Rick Galea (Div.2) for their excellent coaching contributions and for preparing the boys for the development pathway. The Gippsland Power girls representative side competed in the U/16 Youth Girls V/Line Cup carnival in the Latrobe Valley in the same week as the U/15 boy’s teams. The girls had a win and a very competitive loss in both of their matches. Off the field, the on-going assistance and co-operation afforded to Gippsland Power by Latrobe City Council is outstanding and I am most appreciative of their support. Thank you to our co-tenants the Morwell Football Netball Club and Carmel Gniel from the Morwell ladies committee for running the canteen at our home matches and during the V/Line Cup. I also acknowledge the co-operation we get from all of the leagues in Gippsland and their respective affiliate clubs. Gippsland Power is extremely fortunate to have outstanding sponsorship support and I cannot thank each of our sponsors enough for their generosity. Whilst I particularly express my gratitude to our 3 major funders ENGIE, Colin Watson Motors and Warragul Linen Service I am also most grateful for the financial assistance from all of our contributors. A list of all of our sponsors is included in this Annual Report and I urge you all to support them where possible. AFL Vic. and Gippsland Power and the other statewide U/18 competition teams are indebted to the TAC (Transport Accident Commission) for their generous sponsorship of the competition and I would like to acknowledge our appreciation. We are also greatly appreciative of the guidance and assistance given to our Club by AFL Vic and their senior officers Steven Reaper, Paul Hamilton and Lee Fraser and their staff. We thank them for their commitment to the promotion and development of the game. In closing I want to particularly thank the parents and players of all the boys and girls in all age groups who were involved with Gippsland Power this year. I know that our programs simply could not work without your co-operation and your huge commitments of time and travel. To all the TAC Cup players and parents who are leaving us this year I hope you will take some lasting memories with you and I wish you every success for the future. We closed out the home and away season by winning 4 of their last 5 games to finish the season in seventh position. Week 1 of finals saw us come up against eventual premiers, Geelong Falcons. This is where our season came to an end. Although the final margin was not reflective of the players effort and commitment. Congratulations to Callum Porter who was selected by the Western Bulldogs in the November 24 AFL National Draft.
