Song, State, Sawa Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2013 © 2013 Beau Bothwell All rights reserved ABSTRACT Song, State, Sawa: Music and Political Radio between the US and Syria Beau Bothwell This dissertation is a study of popular music and state-controlled radio broadcasting in the Arabic-speaking world, focusing on Syria and the Syrian radioscape, and a set of American stations named Radio Sawa. I examine American and Syrian politically directed broadcasts as multi-faceted objects around which broadcasters and listeners often differ not only in goals, operating assumptions, and political beliefs, but also in how they fundamentally conceptualize the practice of listening to the radio. Beginning with the history of international broadcasting in the Middle East, I analyze the institutional theories under which music is employed as a tool of American and Syrian policy, the imagined youths to whom the musical messages are addressed, and the actual sonic content tasked with political persuasion. At the reception side of the broadcaster-listener interaction, this dissertation addresses the auditory practices, histories of radio, and theories of music through which listeners in the sonic environment of Damascus, Syria create locally relevant meaning out of music and radio. Drawing on theories of listening and communication developed in historical musicology and ethnomusicology, science and technology studies, and recent transnational ethnographic and media studies, as well as on theories of listening developed in the Arabic public discourse about popular music, my dissertation outlines the intersection of the hypothetical listeners defined by the US and Syrian governments in their efforts to use music for political ends, and the actual people who turn on the radio to hear the music. -

Among the many women thus mobilised was Vera Brittain (1893-1970), who would later become a prolific writer, and active feminist and pacifist. In the summer of 1915, after experiencing war work at a local hospital, Brittain interrupted her studies at Somerville College, Oxford to become a fulltime V AD (Voluntary Aid Detachment). A few months later, she signed up to work at a military hospital. Her diary records that she decided to take up nursing upon reading an appeal in the papers for women to offer their services (3 April 1915; Chronicle 176). -

VERA BRITTAIN ( 1893-1970) Certainly the most famous First World War book written by a woman, not least because of its highly successful dramatization which appeared on British and American television, Testament of Youth was published in 1933 and based on the journals Brittain kept during the War. Though the book is sometimes criticized for the naivete of its attitudes, it still provides an unparalleled insight into the impact of the War on a young, middle-class woman. The fighting cost Brittain her brother, her fiance, and every other young man to whom she was close. The experience caused her to become a life-long pacifist. In the following excerpt, Edward is Vera's brother, Geoffrey and Victor ('Tah') his closest friends. In the first section, Vera discusses the painful memory of a rift between her and her fiance, Roland Leighton. In the second, about nine months later, Victor has been wounded in the head and lost his sight. Vera is in Malta, serving as a VAD nurse. Finally, in the third, Vera has returned to London, still nursing, and writes about her response (or lack of it) to the Armistice. Apart from all these novel experiences, my first month at Camberwell1 was distinguished by the one and only real quarrel that I ever had with Roland. It was purely an epistolary quarrel, but its bitterness was none the less for that and the inevitable delay between posts prolonged and greatly added to its emotional repercussions. On October 18th, Roland had sent a letter to Buxton2 excusing himself, none too gracefully, for the terseness of recent communications, and explaining how much absorbed he had become by the small intensities of life at the front. -

Myth, Countermyth and the Politics of Memory: Vera Brittain and Madeleine Clemenceau Jacquemaire’s Interwar Nurse Memoirs Alison Fell University of Leeds Synergies Royaume-Uni Royaume-Uni Summary: This article examines the interwar memoirs written by two First-World-War nurses: Testament of Youth (1933) by British VAD Vera Brittain, and Les Hommes de bonne volonté (1919) by Madeleine Clemenceau 11-22 pp. Jacquemaire, daughter of the French prime minister and Red Cross nurse. It et explores the ways in which these authors challenge the dominant stereotypes Irlande (both positive and negative) of the nurse prevalent during the war, before outlining the alternative images – or countermyths – that they construct in n° 4 their own autobiographical writings. It argues that both authors make use of their nursing experiences as a means of endowing themselves with veteran - 2011 status, thereby allowing them access to the almost exclusively male genre of war writing that gained in popularity during the interwar years. The article concludes that because of the double status of these women, who were both active participants in and passive witnesses to the war, their narratives remain necessarily ambiguous. This reflects more generally the uncomfortable position – between combatant and non-combatant status – in which many female war workers found themselves. Published during the fraught postwar political climate of agitation for integration and the continual systematic racism, many novels by Black authors addressed the urgent topic of interracial relationality, probing the tabooed question of whether Black and White can abide in love and kinship. One of the prominent—and controversial—literary strategies sundry Black novelists used in this decade was casting seemingly raceless or ambiguously-raced characters. Collectively, these novels generated a mixture of critical approval and dismissal in their time and up until recently, marginalized from the African American literary tradition. Even more critically overlooked than the ostensibly raceless project was the strategic mobilization of the trope of passing by some midcentury Black ii writers to imagine the racial divide and possible reconciliation. This dissertation intersects passing with postwar Black fiction that features either racially-anomalous or biracial central characters. Examining three novels from this historical period as my case studies, I argue that one of the ways in which Black writers of this decade have imagined the possibility of interracial love—with all its political pitfalls and ethical imperatives —is through the trope of passing. -
Was a Close Friend of Vera Brittain (1893-1970) from 1942 Until the End of Her Life
VERA BRITTAIN/PAUL BERRY Archive The writer and lecturer Paul Berry (1919-99) was a close friend of Vera Brittain (1893-1970) from 1942 until the end of her life. She appointed him a literary executor, and he later became one of her authorised biographers. This collection comprises his correspondence with VB, and a wide-ranging and varied archive of material gathered and collated by Berry and Mark Bostridge in preparation of their Vera Brittain: A Life (Chatto & Windus, 1995). Berry bequeathed the collection to Somerville College, where Brittain was an undergraduate from 1914-15 & 1919-21. Below is a summary of the collection’s contents; a full catalogue is available on request.
