Daļa rakstu atspoguļo zinātņu vēsturi Latvijā pirms LU nodibināšanas, ļaujot iepazīt arī to pamatu un saknes, no kurām izauga mūsu pirmā nacionālā augstskola. Atskatoties un apkopojot LU šajā jomā pēdējo gadu laikā paveikto, jāatzīmē LU 80 gadu jubilejas konference, kas notika 1999. gada 23. un 24. septembri. Tās laikā desmit sekciju sēdēs tika nolasīti 129 referāti par augstskolu un zinātņu vēsturi, to tēzes ir apkopotas un izdotas krājumā Latvijas Universitātei — 80 (243 Ipp.). Tā kā tēžu pieticīgais apjoms neļauj pilnvērtīgi aptvert aplūkotos jautājumus, pēc konferences tika nolemts turpmāk veidot zinātnisko rakstu krājumus un publicēt tos LU Rakstu sērijas ietvaros, kā arī ikgadējās LU konferencēs radīt īpašu Zinātņu vēstures un muzejniecības sekciju, tās organizēšanu uzticot LU Vēstures muzejam. Zinātņu vēstures un muzejniecības sekcijas sēdes notika 2001. gada 22. un 23. jan­ vārī LU 59. konferences ietvaros, to laikā nolasīts 41 referāts. No abu minēto konferenču materiāliem kā LU Rakstu 639. sējums tika sagatavots pirmais krājums — Zinātņu vēsture un muzejniecība (306 lpp.), kurā publicēti 25 raksti. Krājuma prezentācija notika Pasaules latviešu zinātnieku 2. kongresa Zinātņu un tehnikas vēstures sekcijas sēdes laikā 2001. gada 14. augustā LU Vēstures muzejā. Šajā sēdē nolasīti 20 referāti, bet to tēzes publicētas kongresa krājumā. Nākamās LU 60. konferences Zinātņu vēstures un muzejniecības sekcijas sēdes notika 2002. gada 28. un 29. janvāri, un to laikā tika nolasīts 51 referāts. Izmantojot referātus un vairākus Pasaules latviešu zinātnieku 2. kongresa Zinātņu un tehnikas vēstures sekcijas ziņojumus, tika sagatavots LU Rakstu 653. sējums jeb otrais krājums ar nosaukumu Zinātņu vēsture un muzejniecība (286. lpp.). Dienas gaismu tas ieraudzīja 2003. gada beigās, aptverot 24 rakstus. LU 61. konferences Zinātņu vēstures un muzejniecības sekcijas sēdes notika 2003. gada 27. un 28. janvārī, to laikā tika nolasīti 59 referāti, kas izvērstu rakstu veidā galvenokārt ietverti šajā krājumā. Tādējādi LU Rakstu sērijā šāda veida krājums tiek izdots jau trešo reizi. Redakcijas kolēģija labprāt uzklausīs visus ieteikumus tā pilnīgošanai cerībā, ka turpmākie šādas ievirzes rakstu kopojumi vēl vairāk paplašinās priekšstatu par mūsu augstskolas daudzpusīgo izaugsmes gaitu. As an active educator specialized in geoscience, Kaljuvee was the first to hypothesize in 1922 that Kaali lake cirque in Saaremaa Island, Estonia, was created by meteorite impact. Thanks to mining engineer Reinwald, this assumption was accepted since 1928 due to the exhaustive field and borehole works of the latter (also as a result of exploration by several German scholars, including renowned Alfred Wegener).

SCHULTZ Alfred Wegener not only proposed the theory of continental drift but was also a pioneer of modern tornado research in Europe. lfred Wegener (1880–1930; Fig. 1) is mainly remembered today for his contributions to con- Atinental drift from which the modern theory of plate tectonics—“one of the key scientific concepts of the past century” (Greene 2015)—is derived (Romano and Cifelli 2015). Wegener not only made major contributions to geology and geophysics but also to astronomy and geodesy (Wegener 1905; he was an as- tronomer by training), glaciology (Koch and Wegener 1911; he was a pioneer explorer of Greenland), paleo- climatology (Köppen and Wegener 1924), and mete- oritics (Wegener 1925a). He performed research in at- mospheric physics and meteorology, including cloud microphysics (e.g., Wegener–Bergeron–Findeisen process; Wegener 1910), thermodynamics (Wegener 1911c), the vertical structure of the chemical compo- sition of the atmosphere (e.g., Wegener 1925b), and atmospheric optics (e.g., a subhelic arc is named the Wegener arc; Wegener 1925c). Lesser known are his contributions to the study of tornadoes. In 1917, Wegener published the seminal book Wind- und Wasserhosen in Europa (Tornadoes and Waterspouts in Europe).     History of Meteorology 5 (2009) 23 Bibliography of Recent Literature in the History of Meteorology Twenty Six Years, 1983-2008 Brant Vogel Papers of John Jay Columbia University The following is a bibliography of recent secondary literature in the history of meteorol- ogy, broadly conceived. It is presented in chronological order a) to illustrate the growth of his- tory of meteorology as field in the throes of self-definition, and b) because an artificial schema, whether based on subject, region, period, or discipline, would fail in the face of the diversity of the materials represented. It is intended as a tool for students entering the field, a refresher for those already in it, and a reference for historians in other fields.1 History of the Project The bibliography project began in November 2003 at the History of Science Society An- nual Meeting in Cambridge, MA. James Fleming2 organized a session and a subsequent wildcat dinner for ICHM members. At the session, and afterwards, Fleming told me that the IUHPS had requested that its commissions produce bibliographies for the World History of Science Online Project. I offered that I had already compiled a fairly large bibliographic database while com- pleting my dissertation.3 Because of what I found to be the paucity of literature in the historiog- raphy of meteorology when I started my dissertation research, I had gathered everything I could find. Fleming suggested making a more formal project of it. As there were other bibliographic resources for older material, we decided that twenty years of recent historiography would be the most useful.

Conference on European Tornadoes and Severe Storms Tornadoes in Estonia Heino Tooming Estonian Meteorological and Hydrological Institute Tornadoes or trombes, occur relatively frequently in Estonia. The oldest recording in the former province Livonia is dated 22 June 1795 (Schweder, 1873). One year later six waterspouts were simultaneously observed over the Gulf of Finland. The most spectacular series of tornadoes occurred on 22 May 1872 in Livonia. 25 manors were heavily damaged, 74 farms and a chureh were destroyed, seven persons were killed and fourteen injured. This event belongs according to the Fujita-Pearson tornado scale (Goliger et al., 1997) to the F4 event. Strong tornadoes occurred on IO May 1920 and on 3 August 1922. The latter tornado left one of the longest tracks (P4 class) ever recorded (82 km) in Northern Europe (Letzmann, 1921, 1923). Only the Borås tornado in Sweden in 1899 covered a longer track (260 km). These tornadoes were studied in detail by one of the leading tornado researches of our century Johannes Peter Letzmann, who worked with Tartu University. The biography of J. P. Letzmann is studied and published by R. E. Peterson (1992, 1995). Fifteen to seventeen waterspouts were observed by Captain Toom near the Saaremaa island on 22 July 1928 (Letzmann, 1931). A detailed study was published by Tooming and Moldau (1960) on the tornado which occurred on 27 June 1960 in South Estonia (F3 event). Detailed description were published also on the tornadoes on 27 May 1966 by Kask (1966) and by Tooming, Kotli and Peterson (1995) (P4 event).

SCHULTZ, AND FIONA LOMAS Centre for Atmospheric Science, School of Earth, Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, University of Manchester, Manchester, United Kingdom THILO KÜHNE European Severe Storms Laboratory, Wessling, Germany (Manuscript received 28 August 2015, in final form 11 December 2015) ABSTRACT A synthesis of tornado observations across Europe between 1800 and 2014 is used to produce a pan- European climatology. Based on regional tornado-occurrence datasets and articles published in peer- reviewed journals, the evolution and the major contributions to tornado databases for 30 European countries were analyzed. Between 1800 and 2014, 9563 tornadoes were reported in Europe with an increase from 8 tornadoes per year between 1800 and 1850 to 242 tornadoes per year between 2000 and 2014. The majority of the reports came from northern, western, and southern Europe, and to a lesser extent from eastern Europe where tornado databases were developed after the 1990s. Tornadoes occur throughout the year with a maximum in June–August for most of Europe and in August–November for southern Europe. Tornadoes occur more frequently between 1300 and 1500 UTC over most of Europe and between 0900 and 1100 UTC over southern Europe. Where intensity was known, 74.7% of tornadoes were classified as F0 and F1, 24.5% as F2 and F3, and 0.8% as F4 and F5. Comparing this intensity distribution over Europe with the intensity distribution for tornadoes in the United States shows that tornadoes over western and eastern Europe are more likely to be supercellular tornadoes and those over northern and southern Europe are likely to also include nonsupercellular tornadoes.

See on nähtamatu niit, millest kinni hoides püsime rajal, mis ei rohtu ega lõpe. Praegune aeg ei anna palju mahti tagasi ega kõrvale vaadata, sest igast suunast tulvab uut ja mitmekesist informatsiooni, mis kipub katma vana, mõnikord ka väärika teadmise meie maast, tema elust ja oludest. Maateadlaste erinevate põlvkondade ette- võtmiste mõistmiseks tutvustab aastaraamat nii varasemaid sünd- musi ja inimesi kui ka annab uut teadmist kodumaa uurimise alalt. Aastaraamatus on kirjatööd jagatud traditsiooniliselt kolme ossa: esimeses on uurimuslikud artiklid ja ülevaated, teises meenutused neist, kellel ei ole enam kunagi võimalik seda raamatut näha ega lugeda ning kolmandas – kuidas möödus eelmine ehk 2016.
