ZooKeys 870: 77–100. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.870.35971 Abstract The current paper expands knowledge of two Chinese cave spider species originally described in the genus Maymena Gertsch, 1960: M. paquini Miller, Griswold & Yin, 2009 and M. kehen Miller, Griswold & Yin, 2009. With the exception of these two species, the genus Maymena is endemic to the western hemisphere, and new evidence presented here supports the creation of a new genus for the Chinese species, which we name Yamaneta gen. nov. The male of Y. kehen is described for the first time. Detailed illustrations of the habitus, male palps and epigyne are provided for these two species, as well as descriptions of their webs. -

American Museum of Natural History, online at http://research.amnh.org/entomology/spiders/catalog/index.html Last udated: 10.12.2009 INTRODUCTION Fossil spiders have not been fully cataloged since Bonnet’s Bibliographia Araneorum and are not included in the current Catalog. Since Bonnet’s time there has been considerable progress in our understanding of the spider fossil record and numerous new taxa have been described. As part of a larger project to catalog the diversity of fossil arachnids and their relatives, our aim here is to offer a summary list of the known fossil spiders in their current systematic position; as a first step towards the eventual goal of combining fossil and Recent data within a single arachnological resource. To integrate our data as smoothly as possible with standards used for living spiders, our list follows the names and sequence of families adopted in the Catalog. For this reason some of the family groupings proposed in Wunderlich’s (2004, 2008) monographs of amber and copal spiders are not reflected here, and we encourage the reader to consult these studies for details and alternative opinions. Extinct families have been inserted in the position which we hope best reflects their probable affinities. Genus and species names were compiled from established lists and cross-referenced against the primary literature. -

Filistata fuscata Nakatsudi, 1943 (Filistatidae), is taxonomically revised and redescribed with topotypical speci- mens newly obtained. Nakatsudi is regarded as the only author of the name, contrary to the hither- to treatments in the catalogues as Kishida, 1943 or Kishida in Nakatsudi, 1943. Filistata fuscata Kishida, 1947, validated on the basis of Kishida (1947) as its original description is regarded as a junior homonym and synonym of Filistata fuscata Nakatsudi, 1943. After a careful assessment of characteristics, the species is transferred from the original genus into Tricalamus Wang, 1987, and a new combination Tricalamus fuscatus is proposed. Two new species of the genera Clubiona La- treille, 1804 (Clubionidae) and Athamas O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1877 (Salticidae), are described from Koror Island of Palau under the names, Clubiona jaegeri sp. nov. and Athamas proszynskii sp. nov., respectively. Four major areas, each corresponding to a historically persistent landmass, were used in the analyses: eastern Nearctic (EN), western Nearctic (WN), eastern Palaeoarctic (EP) and western Palaeoarctic (WP). Parsimony-based tree fitting showed that there is no significantly supported general area cladogram for the dataset. Yet, distributions are strongly phylogenetically conserved, as revealed by dispersal- vicariance analysis (DIVA). DIVA-based permutation tests were used to pinpoint phylogenetically determined biogeographic patterns. Consistent with expectations, continental dispersals (WP-EP and WN-EN) are sig- nificantly more common than palaeocontinental dispersals (WN-EP and EN-WP), which in turn are more common than disjunct dispersals (EN-EP and WN-WP). There is significant dispersal asymmetry both within the Nearctic (WN+EN more common than EN+WN) and the Palaeoarctic (EP+WP more common than WP-tEP). Cross- Beringian faunal connections have traditionally been emphasized but are not more important than cross-Atlantic connections in our data set. -

A Review of the Chinese Psechridae (Araneae)

The Chinese psechrid spiders of the genera Fecenia and Psechrus are reviewed. The species Fecenia hainanensis is newly synonymized with F. cylindrata. The species P. mimus is considered a nomen dubium. The species P. senoculata is regarded as a valid species. The male is newly described for P. tingpingensis. Three new species are described: P. jinggangensis new species, P. rani new species, and P. taiwanensis new species. In all, nine psechrid species are recognized from China. The spinnerets, trichobothria, and tarsal organ morphology of P. tingpingensis are presented. A key to Chinese Psechrus species is also provided. Sixteen behavioral acts were described for M. lemnis- cata preying on house flies, carpenter ants, and Asiatic oak wee- vils in the field and laboratory. Behavioral sequences varied with prey type, but generally began with plucking and diverged there- after. The predatory behavior of M. lemniscata is most similar to that of the higher araneids. INTRODUCTION Mecynogea lemniscata is currently placed in the Araneidae in subfamily Cyrtophorinae (Coddington, 1989), despite having many characteristics in common with linyphiids. Mecynogea has a his- tory of taxonomic uncertainty and has been placed in either the Linyphiidae or the Araneidae by various authorities. Within the Araneidae, Mecynogea has been positioned both as a primitive araneid (Kaston, 1964) and as an advanced araneid (Levi, 1980). Manuscript received 30 April 1992 153 154 Psyche [Vol. 99 Some of the past uncertainty surrounding the taxonomic place- ment of Mecynogea is because of the superficial similarity in web structure between Mecynogea and linyphiids; however, web struc- ture is not necessarily a reliable phylogenetic indicator (Levi, 1978). Exline (1948) hypothesized that dome web construction by Mecynogea and Linyphia arose independently through convergent evolution. Similarities between Cyrtophora webs and linyphiid webs also are believed to be the result of convergence (Nentwig and Heimer, 1983; Lubin, 1980), and based on behavior and morphology, Cyrtophora is similar to Araneidae (Blanke, 1972 cited in Lubin, 1980). -
