ABSTRACT “BAPTISM ON BEHALF OF THE DEAD”: 1 CORINTHIANS 15:29 IN ITS HELLENISTIC CONTEXT by Matthew Michael Connor This thesis analyzes 1 Corinthians 15:29 – a reference to “Baptism on behalf of the dead” – as an ancient Mediterranean ritual conducted on behalf of the dead. Scholars have been unable to reach a consensus regarding what Paul was referring to in this passage, with many commentators rejecting the most simple and obvious reading of the text. This paper analyzes the text and translation of 15:29, as well as the history of its interpretation before turning to the category of rituals on behalf of the dead in the ancient world. First, this short book is focused on the doctrine of sanctification, to be distinguished from the doctrine of justification. In justification, the Christian is declared righteous, not because he is, in himself, righteous to any degree, but because of the righteousness of Christ alone. The Apostle Paul says in Romans 8:1 that ‘There is there- fore now no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus.’ This is the foundation on which the Christian begins the struggle against personal sin, which is the focus of sancti- fication. It is in sanctification that God begins tomake the Christian into what he has already declared the Christian to be, righteous. -

Water, air and fire at work in Hero’s machines Amelia Carolina Sparavigna Dipartimento di Fisica, Politecnico di Torino Corso Duca degli Abruzzi 24, Torino, Italy Known as the Michanikos, Hero of Alexandria is considered the inventor of the world's first steam engine and of many other sophisticated devices. Here we discuss three of them as described in his book “Pneumatica”. These machines, working with water, air and fire, are clear examples of the deep knowledge of fluid dynamics reached by the Hellenistic scientists. Hero of Alexandria, known as the Mechanicos, lived during the first century in the Roman Egypt [1]. He was probably a Greek mathematician and engineer who resided in the city of Alexandria. We know his work from some of writings and designs that have been arrived nowadays in their Greek original or in Arabic translations. From his own writings, it is possible to gather that he knew the works of Archimedes and of Philo the Byzantian, who was a contemporary of Ctesibius [2]. It is almost certain that Heron taught at the Museum, a college for combined philosophy and literary studies and a religious place of cult of Muses, that included the famous Library. For this reason, Hero claimed himself a pupil of Ctesibius, who was probably the first head of the Museum of Alexandria. Most of Hero’s writings appear as lecture notes for courses in mathematics, mechanics, physics and pneumatics [2]. In optics, Hero formulated the Principle of the Shortest Path of Light, principle telling that if a ray of light propagates from a point to another one within the same medium, the followed path is the shortest possible. -

REFLECTIONS ON THE DOCTRINE OF THE TRINITY RAOUL DEDEREN Andrews University, Berrien Springs, Michigan Faith in the living God has been rejected time and again by the ignorant and the indifferent, as well as by many of the learned and the thoughtful. It has been especially chal- lenged today. Such theologians as Bishop John A. T. Robinson of Woolwich, honestly seeking to be Honest to God, urge Christians to abandon most of the phrasing which historically has been used to convey Christian thought. Similarly, the late Bishop James A. Pike of California dismisses many traditional doctrines as old bottles which will inevitably burst and whose bursting should occasion no regrets. In this kind of context many men, even ministers, feel uneasy when they think about the Trinity. The question before us is whether it is time to renounce a doctrine which, by affirming that there are three persons in God, seems to have produced confusion rather than clarification, or whether it was designed to embody values that are a vital and necessary part of the Christian faith. From the days of Arius it has been a chosen scheme with his disciples to represent the doctrine of the Trinity as an artificial theological construct, and consequently unimportant. To a large number of Christians, however, it is a doctrine fundament4 to Christianity since it deals with a correct knowledge of God. Related to the divine Being, his nature and mode of being, this knowledge affects every man's understanding of God as the object of his worship, whether he regards him as one in essence and one in person, or admits that in the unity of the Deity there are three equally divine persons. -

The religion came to prominence at a time when the Roman peace (Pax Romana) of Caesar Augustus brought a network of roads to the empire and formal religious toleration allowed religions to flourish. Christianity rode this crest of opportunity and its adherents multiplied exponentially. The atmosphere was rich with religious diversity including Judaism, Roman state religion, the mystery cults and the schools of Greek philosophy. It must be noted here that Greek philosophy provided the ideas that steered the minds of Roman citizens of the Empire and shaped their religion. Philip Curtin emphasizes that the growth of the Roman Empire provided an articulating framework for the cultural synthesis that Greek Philosophy generated. 1 This brief, reflective research looks analytically at the impact of Greek philosophy on Christianity from three perspectives. They are: 1) the challenge that it presented to Christianity, 2) the signs of syncretism, and 3) Christian differentiation despite assimilation of aspects of Greek philosophy. Though not exhaustive because of its brevity, the study may help with discussions on the backgrounds of Christianity, and also stimulate an interest in the religion, politics, and history of the Levant in the first century. -

Clement of Alexandria's Methodological Framework
Adam PRYOR Clement of Alexandria’s Methodological Framework and its Relation to the Biblical Virtues in Light of Concepts of Faith, Knowledge, and Gnosis P h i l o s o p h y ’s relation to theology has always been a topic of much debate. From the time of the Pre-Socratics to our current age, philosophers and theologians alike have contested the degree to which these two methodologically similar disciplines are related. In the tract of this long lineage of discussion, Titus Flavius Clemens, better known as Clement of Alexandria, has made a significant contribution. His conception of the relationship between philosophy and theology as taking different paths to a single conception of truth opens the door for a host of theological issues that conflict with some of the dogmatics and doctrines of the Church. More impor- t a n t l y, Clement’s attempt to incorporate philosophical thought as an aggrandizing principle in relation to the Biblical virtues resulted in a set of axiomatic statements and a methodological framework that is inexorably rooted in an anti-ecumenical paradigm, while simultaneously rooting itself in a solely faith-based perspective of Christianity that lays emphasis on the individual’s plight to act upon an ever- increasing understanding of God’s call in this world for each of us. Principles of Clement’s Theology Clement of Alexandria was born c. A.D. 150 to pagan parents. We know very lit- tle about the life of Clement beyond this. We know he had a thirst for knowledge and this led to him doing a great deal of traveling to places like Italy, Palestine and Syria, while searching for a satisfactory instructor. -

Abstract: The fifteen Ptolemies that sat on the throne of Egypt between 305 B.C. (the date of assumption of basileia by Ptolemy I) and 30 B.C. (death of Cleopatra VII) are in most cases little known and, even in its most recognised bibliography, their work has been somewhat overlooked, unappreciated. Although boisterous and sometimes unloved, with the tumultuous and dissolute lives, their unbridled and unrepressed ambitions, the intrigues, the betrayals, the fratricides and the crimes that the members of this dynasty encouraged and practiced, the Ptolemies changed the Egyptian life in some aspects and were responsible for the last Pharaonic monuments which were left us, some of them still considered true masterpieces of Egyptian greatness. The Ptolemaic Period was indeed a paradoxical moment in the History of ancient Egypt, as it was with a genetically foreign dynasty (traditions, language, religion and culture) that the country, with its capital in Alexandria, met a considerable economic prosperity, a significant political and military power and an intense intellectual activity, and finally became part of the world and Mediterranean culture. The fifteen Ptolemies that succeeded to the throne of Egypt between 305 B.C. (date of assumption of basileia by Ptolemy I) and 30 B.C. (death of Cleopatra VII), after Alexander’s death and the division of his empire, are, in most cases, very poorly understood by the public and even in the literature on the topic. -
