Founded in 1939, Royal Winnipeg Ballet holds the distinction of being the first and only ballet company in North America to hold the “Royal” designation and is also one of the oldest ballet companies on the continent. In 1953, RWB received its royal title, the first granted under the reign of Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Winnipeg Ballet first began to tour Canada in 1945; it completed its first American tour in 1954. In 1975, the RWB toured Israel and was the first Canadian ballet to visit the country. For its 70th anniversary, the RWB returned to Israel and was greeted by audiences in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa with resounding accolades. In 2014, RWB toured China as part of its 75th Anniversary Season. The RWB spends anywhere from five to 20 weeks a year on the road, performing in centres large and small. The RWB has performed in the United States, South America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and in every Canadian province. Over time, the Royal Winnipeg Ballet has expanded its repertoire to include bold, innovative new works that embody creative excellence and engage audiences in an ongoing commitment to the vitality of this unique art form.

FFDNORTH.COM September 29 – October 1, 2015 FROM ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ILTER IBRAHIMOF When I initially floated the idea of starting a Canadian edition of the Fall for Dance™ festival from New York City Center at the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts, I instinctively knew that the event would be an excellent and game-changing addition to Toronto’s annual performing arts offerings. I am very lucky and grateful that both Mark Hammond and Madeleine Skoggard at the Sony Centre felt the same way. Despite my belief in the project, I could not have imagined the level and spectrum of wonderful support we have received to make the festival a reality. I’d like to thank the entire team at the Sony Centre, the festival’s founding board members and all granting bodies, foundations and individuals who have extended their generosity to us. We get to rediscover our dancers through the eyes of guest choreographers, we also get to see them reveling in contemporary choreographic vernaculars and finally, we have the chance to see dance itself as a more abstract form, free of narrative. Mixed bills are also an opportunity for all of us to participate in the pure creation of new dance forms, thus leaving our mark in history. JEAN GRAND-MAÎTRE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR As with every season, I always enjoy mounting this particular 2002 - PRESENT program as it gives me the chance to challenge you with an – eclectic and contrasting evening of riveting ballets. Tonight, we celebrate the limitless potential of ballet as it will thrice morph into radically different esthetics before your very eyes. George Balanchine’s spectacular Allegro Brillante captures with dynamic panache the very essence of his homeland’s greatest orchestral music. Indeed, like many other one-act ballets he created, these masterworks became his personal tribute to his most beloved composer P.T. Tchaikovsky. It has been performed across the world by hundreds of ballet companies and is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of the 20th century. Helen Pickett is a renowned and accomplished American choreographer with significant international credentials. This Canadian premiere of her sublime Petal marks her first appearance on a Canadian stage, and we are extremely proud to introduce her to our audiences.
