9 Would you like an adventure" now, or would you like to have your tea first ? ~ J. M. Barrie, Peter Pan" You know the enduring characters from this classic story and you’ve probably identified with them throughout your life, but in case you PETER PAN need a refresher, here’s a little bit The mischievous leader of the Lost Boys, Peter Pan is the boy who about each one to keep in mind doesn’t want to grow up. After stumbling upon the Darling home while searching for his shadow, he leads Wendy Darling and her throughout the ballet. brothers on an adventure to Neverland. IMAGINE IF PETER PAN COULDN’T FLY. IT WOULD BE LIKE A CAKE WITHOUT ICING. The breathtaking dancing and adorable story would still be satisfying, but add in some flying, and you’ve got a spectacle to behold. It takes a lot more than Pixie Dust to get the dancers off the stage. Enter Dylan Trujillo, a second-generation flying expert from Flying by Foy, who specializes in lifting performers. He’s the man behind the curtain for this production, operating the mechanical lifts with his WENDY DARLING The daughter of a high-profile London couple, Wendy has team. But don’t ask him exactly how he does it. He a nurturing and motherly relationship with her brothers won’t tell you. who join her and Peter on an adventure to Neverland. She “We try to make it look effortless and we always strive to decides to return home after narrowly escaping death at the hands of Captain Hook. preserve the magic. You won’t see a picture of what we do backstage,” said Dylan who approaches every show with the same formula – “make it safe, make it happen, make it look good” in that order. Being flown for the first time can be intimidating for a dancer, but Dylan said part of his job is to ensure they are as comfortable as possible. Dancers are used to being in control of their bodies, so they have to let go a little when they get in the harness. “Flying is very demanding for the dancers’ bodies. They have to constantly engage their core and back muscles to maintain their posture in the air. This is what really sells the effect for the audience,” he said. “We always try to make them comfortable and reassure them that it’s safe.” This isn’t the first time Dylan has done the flying in a Peter Pan production. In fact, he spends 200 days every year traveling to theatres all over the world, flying actors, dancers, ice skaters, and even animals.

TICK-TOCK CROCODILE Alberta Ballet dancer Yoshiya Sakurai, who plays Captain Hook’s nemesis, the crocodile is constantly Peter Pan, said he has complete faith in the flying taunting Captain Hook after relieving him of a hand in a team. “I’m nervous because it is really high, but I’m still previous encounter. If it’s one thing that Peter Pan teaches us it’s that embracing your inner child is important to eternal youth. And dance is that one activity we can all do no matter what our age to maintain that youthful spirit. You already know about the outstanding programming Alberta Ballet School offers to children through recreational and professional level training. That is clear by the talent of our current and former students you will see on the stage today. But did you know that we offer adult classes too? Regardless of your age, gender or experience level, Alberta Ballet School offers a variety of adult programming. Conveniently scheduled on evenings and weekends, dancers of all levels can choose classes in an eight to 10-week blocks or a 10-class pass useable anytime. Classes range from contemporary dance and ballet to barre fitness classes. As a former dancer myself, I have experienced the health and fitness benefits of dancing. It improves flexibility, mobility, bone density and helps build and maintain muscles. It’s also good for your heart, your memory, your balance and coordination. And the best part is, you’re never too old to start! For more information about any of the programming offered by Alberta Ballet School for students of any age, please visit our website at albertaballetschool. com or follow us on Facebook or Instagram. Why not get a group of friends together and give try a barre class today? Afterall, dancing is just as timeless as this beautiful production you’re about to see.

IN LOVING MEMORY MACKENZIE LEWIS When she was just three years old, Mackenzie Lewis’s passion for dance was ignited when she played a sea horse in Alberta Ballet School’s production of Peter Pan. The young dancer’s life was cut short at the age of 15 after a lengthy battle with AML Leukemia. For more than half her life, Mackenzie received treatment in Edmonton and Calgary to fight the disease, including a bone marrow transplant. Despite her battle, Mackenzie died in 2018. Before she passed away, Mackenzie had told her parents, Jake and Jennifer, that it was her dream to help kids around the world. She also had an unbridled passion for ballet, so it seemed natural for them to donate $1,000 of her savings to help make dance more accessible to kids. They plan to contribute the same amount each year for the next five years in her name to support Alberta Ballet School students in Edmonton pursue their own dreams of dance. “We feel dancing for some is not only an activity or a career, but a gift of pure joy and every child should be able to have access to this,” her parents said. We are so honoured that the Lewis family has chosen the students of Alberta Ballet School as a way to honour the memory of their beautiful daughter. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We hope we make her proud. In loving memory: Mackenzie Lewis April 2003 – November 2018

DONATIONS TO THE MACKENZIE LEWIS FUND ARE ACCEPTED THROUGHOUT THE YEAR. Please email [email protected] to learn more about contributing.
