Hundreds attend Gately's funeral 08:46, October 19, 2009

Hundreds of fans have crowded streets around a Church for the funeral of Irish pop star . He died from fluid in the lungs last week while on holiday on the Spanish resort island of Majorca.

Ireland's former Prime Minister , 's partner and members of Irish pop group joined the ceremony, alongside Gately's family and partner Andrew Cowles.

Louis Walsh, manager, said, "It's difficult, but we have to celebrate his life as well. And we just have to do that."

David Furnish, Gately's friend, said, "I think it's wonderful that so many people have turned out to honour Stephen's life, but I just feel incredibly sad. I have lost a dear friend, and so early, and so soon, And someone who was at a state he was his most happiest in his life. And it just seems so unfair. I can not really make sense of it."

His funeral service included a performance by his bandmates, relayed via loudspeaker from the the St, Laurence O'Toole Church.

Afterwards, the remaining Boyzone band members, one of Gately's brothers, and Boyzone's tour manager carried his coffin from the church.

They later stood locked in arms to pay their final tributes to their friend, whom they described as a brother, before embracing Gately's parents.
