  • Tennis in and Around Sheffield, 1874-1914
Tennis in and Around Sheffield, 1874-1914 Andy Lusis Volume two of The History of the City of Sheffield, 1843-1993 includes a chapter on sport and recreation by Patrick Renshaw, which includes only two references to tennis. After informing us that it can be played in parks, he later tries to redeem himself with: “Finally, any writer on sport who failed to mention such local heroes as Roger Taylor, the tennis player who conquered mighty Rod Laver in his prime at Wimbledon in 1970, ... would deserve to be kicked into touch.” Anyone with an interest in tennis history might expect more of a writer with that surname, but he is only following a long tradition of local historians who have failed to appreciate the rich heritage of tennis in Sheffield. It is unlikely that the area around Sheffield has received better treatment. Before starting to redress the balance it is worth looking at the origins of lawn tennis and its arrival in Sheffield. Origins of lawn tennis What was the state of racket games in Britain in the 1870s? Real tennis (as we now call it, but simply called tennis then) was a game difficult to master, restricted to specially built courts mostly at exclusive clubs. Rackets (or racquets) was not much different. There were some expert players and women were very unlikely to take part. Squash rackets was little known at this time. Badminton, although devised earlier from the children’s game of battledore and shuttlecock (a kind of keepie uppie), and developed by army officers in India, was introduced to the public as a new game in 1873 for indoor and outdoor play, and seemed set to become a fashionable pastime.

  • Sheffield Patrol Group
SHEFFIELD PATROL GROUP presents SHEFFIELD Poor wretch! who once hath paced that dolent city Shall pace it often, doomed beyond all pity, With horror ever deepening from the first... A local community leader pauses from discussion with a trainee Robocop to look suspiciously towards the photographer. Abbeyfield Park is in Burngreave, Sheffield and the festival was an attempt at promoting community cohesion in a multicultural area of the city characterised by high levels of unemployment and poverty. It was a pleasant day and a substantial crowd had gathered to smoke dope, drink Special Brew, graze on street food and enjoy a programme of second rate music. Zion Train were the headlining act, but they didn’t manage to make it on stage due to a bomb scare bringing the event to a premature end. The festival was held just a few days after the murderous outrage perpetrated on the citizens of London by a nihilistic death squad protesting global injustice in the name of Islam. Despite the atmosphere of fear and paranoia that reigned throughout England at the time, the evacuation of the festival was calm and orderly. The legacy of kowtowing to paternalistic authority that marks the post- industrial cities of Britain has its virtues. The cancelled event was restaged in September. 2 There seem to be a lot of hairdressing salons in the English-speaking world that refer to the Acropolis in their business names. I don’t know why. Maybe the caryatids of the Porch of the Maidens on the Erechtheion are renowned for their quality hair-dos? Langsett Road in Sheffield seems to have little in common with Athens.

PERCEPTIONS OF IMPRECISE REGIONS IN RELATION TO GEOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION RETRIEVAL A study submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Information Management at THE UNIVERSITY OF SHEFFIELD by LINDA MANSBRIDGE Abstract The Internet is an increasingly important source of information. Many Web searches are for geographical information or for other information within a geographical context. However, there is a disparity between the way in which geographical information is stored in information systems and the way in which most people think about geographical space. While in some cases this arises from problems with place names, much ‘everyday’ geography concerns imprecise or vague regions which have no single or officially-recognized boundary. The boundary of an imprecise region is, by definition, vague. The organization of geographical space into areas bounded, usually by lines, is a necessary component of having a sense of ‘place’. Research in the early days of GIS necessarily focused on the technology required for establishing effective systems for presenting geographical information. However, in more recent years, research has involved workers from a wide variety of disciplines looking at the ways in which humans perceive their geographical world. The field of psychology has been instrumental in investigations into how humans form cognitive maps, a mental representation of the world around them. Cognitive maps do not necessarily match the empirical reality of geography very closely; distortions in the perception of location and distance may arise from individual perceptions of a place. The aim of this study was to investigate how people perceive Sheffield City Centre, which is a ‘real’ place, known by that name, but having no single official boundary.
