These special rules are designed to make the game run smoothly and to give certain flavor to the game. With the optional rules, the reason for the rule is given in parenthesis.

Victory Conditions - This defines the entire game. Need to come up with a system where the French gain more by defending Leipzig and the Allies lose/don’t gain any by not attacking.

Daily Sequence of Play -

Command Structure – The Leipzig battle presented many problems, for both sides, in effectively controlling their forces. Both sides are essentially going to be using the wing commander rule as if a person was playing each wing commander (even if there is no actual player for the commander). French – Napoleon is CinC with Ney and Murat as wing commanders under him. Ney and Murat can be given CPs to control their own forces. Napoleon may also spend CPs directly on the various forces himself. Allied – Schwarzenberg is the CinC. Barclay de Tolly, Blucher, Bennigsen, Bernadotte act as wing commanders. Schwarzenberg may not directly command forces within these wings.

The problem with the allies is that each army, essentially, acted on their own with some operational direction from Schwarzenberg. What is the best way to represent that? If we allow each army commander to roll for his own CPs, then that is probably too flexible and will allow the allies too much maneuverability.

How about… Schwarzenberg treats the other armies as forces when he rolls CPs. He then uses CPs to activate the other army commanders. Once activated these other armies roll their own CPs for use by their own forces. Barclay de Tolly still acts as a regular wing commander for Schwarzenberg. Schwarzenberg then uses his remaining CPs to command his own forces. If Schwarzenberg doesn’t activate the armies, then they roll receiving ½ the rolled CPs (rounded down).

Allied Emperors – During this battle the emperors, of the allied powers, saw it as their right to meddle in the affairs of the army. Sometimes the results were good sometimes not so good. The “Emperor Stand” represents the presence of the allied sovereigns. At all times it must be placed at a point where they can “see” what’s going on. This is defined as a high point of terrain (hill, ridge, etc.) that allows them a line of sight (subject to visibility rules) to the action that they are currently closest too. For Example, if they start a pulse not being able to see any fighting then they must move to a point where they can see the closest fighting that took place last pulse. This move ignores terrain and does not take any movement points to accomplish. The effect of the “Emperor Stand” is two fold. The closest force commander, within visibility range of the ES, must roll a die and determine if he has been given an automatic Attack order. A roll of 4-6 (on a d6) means they have influenced the force commander into ignoring all other orders and going over to the attack. If the force is part of the allied army’s guard (Austrian Grenadier Corps, Austrian Cuirassier Division, Russo-Prussian Guard, or 2 nd Cavalry Corps), then they have a 1-4 (d6) chance of overriding any orders the force may receive and force them to remain inactive. These die rolls take place after any and all activations have been performed for the allied side.

The Causeway –

Night Turns -

Optional Rules

Imperial Supply Train/War Chest (Flavor) (this might be a special rule…) –

German Allies Switch Sides

French Guard Attack (Play Balance) – The French may designate, once / day, an attack as a “Guard Attack”. The attack must be made by units of the French Guard (Old, Middle, or Young). Only one force may be designated to receive this benefit. The attack lasts for a complete turn or the remainder of the current turn. During this attack any combat by these units is given an additional +1 pip to their attack dice.

French Breakout Attempt (Flavor) – Once the Allies had gained the upper hand they became very worried that the French might attempt a breakout through the allied forces. The Allies were hoping to avoid a repeat of the ferocious attacks Vandamme’s forces launched in their breakout attempts at the battle of Kulm. This rule gives the same bonuses as the French Guard Attack rule except any two French forces may be designated for the breakout attempt. This rule can only be invoked if the French have reached 80% of their Army breakpoint. The bonus lasts for one complete turn. If the two French forces succeed in opening a hole in the Allied forces, then they must move towards the nearest board edge and attempt to escape.

French Retreat (Flavor) – During the game, the French may declare that their army is in retreat. At this point three forces may be designated as the rear guard and three forces may be designated the advanced guard. Only those forces may actively engage in combat and they ignore any flank bonuses the allies may generate. The rest must avoid combat and move to the west of the Elster river as soon as possible. The advanced guard may initiate combat with allied forces on the west side of the Elster only if those forces are blocking their retreat path. The rear guard may only initiate combat against allied troops on the East side of the Elster. Retreat path must be the historical road… What keeps the French from declaring retreat 1 st turn?

Cautious Allies (Flavor) – Once the Allies had beaten the French, they satisfied themselves with mostly following up the retreating French forces. At this point they were interested in preserving their forces for future battles. This rule is invoked when the French have declared a Retreat . Once this happens, the Allied commanders have their aggressiveness ratings reduced by one level (i.e. Aggressive -> None, None -> Cautious, etc.) Each commander will need to roll his own activation. Command points may not be used to activate commanders. Instead CPs are used to add +1 to the activation die roll of the commander. The CP cost is based on the number normally required to be activated. For Example, if an Austrian commander requires 3 CPs to be activated, Schwarzenberg must spend 3CPs to get a +1 to the commander’s normal activation die roll.
