INTERIM RECOVERY PLAN NO. 314 SEDGELANDS IN HOLOCENE DUNE SWALES RECOVERY PLAN September 2011 Department of Environment and Conservation Species and Communities Branch Locked Bag 104, Bentley Delivery Centre, WA, 6983 FOREWORD Interim Recovery Plans (IRPs) are developed within the framework laid down in Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) Policy Statements Nos 44 and 50. IRPs outline the recovery actions that are required to urgently address those threatening processes most affecting the ongoing survival of threatened taxa or ecological communities, and begin the recovery process. DEC is committed to ensuring that critically endangered ecological communities are conserved through the preparation and implementation of Recovery Plans or Interim Recovery Plans and by ensuring that conservation action commences as soon as possible and always within one year of endorsement of that rank by DEC’s Director of Nature Conservation. This Interim Recovery Plan will operate from September 2011 but will remain in force until withdrawn or replaced. It is intended that, if the community is still listed as critically endangered after five years, the need for an updated plan will be evaluated. The provision of funds identified in this Interim Recovery Plan is dependent on budgetary and other constraints affecting DEC, as well as the need to address other priorities. Information in this IRP was accurate at September 2011. This interim recovery plan replaces plan number 110 Sedgelands in Holocene dune swales 2002-2007 by V. English, J. Blyth, N. Gibson, D. Pember, J. Davis, J. Tucker, P. Jennings and B. Walker. ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This interim recovery plan was prepared by Gemma Grigg and Valerie English. -

Environmental Defender’s Office of Western Australia (Inc.) Wetlands Fact Sheet 23 Updated December 2010 An introduction to Wetlands Western Australia contains a large number of significant wetlands that provide important habitats for native plants and animals. Many of these wetlands have been damaged or destroyed by land developments, the alteration of natural water system regimes and pollution. In agricultural areas, significant land clearing has led to many naturally saline lakes and marshes becoming hyper-saline and unable to sustain native species. It is estimated that over 80% of the wetlands of the Swan Coastal Plain have been destroyed, with only 15% retaining high conservation values. This fact sheet examines the legal protection that applies to wetlands in Western Australia and identifies the bodies responsible for their management. For information on the laws relating to other water resources, see Fact Sheet 21: River, watercourses and groundwater. What are wetlands? The Rights in Water and Irrigation Act 1914 (WA) (“RIWI Act”) defines a wetland as a natural collection of water (permanent or temporary) on the surface of any land and includes any lake, lagoon, swamp or marsh; and a natural collection of water that has been artificially altered. A wetland is not a watercourse (i.e. any river, creek, stream, brook or reservoir in which water flows into, through or out of; or any place where water flows that is prescribed by local by-laws to be a watercourse). Under the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat 1971 (“Ramsar Convention”), a wide variety of natural and human-made habitat types can be classified as wetlands. -

Description of six Lepidosperma species (Cyperaceae) based on type specimens. Nuytsia 22(5): 295–322 (2012). Many species of Lepidosperma Labill. have been poorly circumscribed, resulting in significant nomenclatural confusion. Full descriptions of six species based solely on type specimens held in the Webb Herbarium in Florence (FI-W) and the Preiss Herbarium in Lund (LD) are presented here in order to facilitate accurate application of the names involved. Descriptions are provided for Lepidosperma costale Nees, L. gladiatum Labill., L. fimbriatum Nees, L. humile (Nees) Boeck., L. longitudinale Labill. and L. squamatum Labill., as well as notes about these species. Introduction The genus Lepidosperma Labill. contains 73 currently named species (Barrett & Wilson 2012) with a large number of unnamed taxa remaining to be described. Determining the correct application of existing names is crucial before any new names are created so as not to increase nomenclatural confusion. Barrett and Wilson (2012) have recently examined all relevant type specimens and chosen lectotypes as required, resolving a great deal of past confusion. -

The series of wetlands within the Site exhibits a continuum of development in geomorphology, hydrology and vegetation and is considered by researchers to be a unique wetland system in Western Australia and one of the youngest wetland systems on the Swan Coastal Plain. The sedgelands of the Site are included in the national list of threatened ecological communities. 8. Introduction Recent molecular phylogenetic studies in Cyperaceae have greatly increased our understanding of relationships in the family (Muasya et al.
