 Test and purchase cleaning products that are less harmful to the environment and are cost effective  Perform a cost analysis on the purchase of hybrid vehicles  Test and evaluate new vehicle products for equipment (like idle reduction technologies) that will reduce fuel consumption  Use alternative fuels (electric, biofuels) that reduce oil consumption and provide a dependable fuel supply and substitute to diesel fuel  Review service intervals to extend intervals to reduce oil consumption  Encourage the purchase of equipment that can be used for multiple uses, to increase usage and decrease the number of vehicles within the fleet  Be an active member in organizations that work to improve our environment and reduce our consumption of non-renewable energy.

Below is a list of the City’s past, present and future environmental goals.

PAST  Received a grant to start using ULSD (Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel) two years before it became a Federal requirement in July, 2006.  Use recycled oil in City vehicle. Uses four times less crude oil.  Use recycled antifreeze in City vehicles. Use ten times less new antifreeze.  Number of fleet equipment has not increased over 1% in past five years.  Fleet fuel consumption in gallons of fuel used has remained constant over last five years.  Received a 2006 grant to install oxidation exhaust catalyst on 49 of our diesel vehicles, reducing exhaust emissions by up to 50%. PRESENT  Using environmental products to clean parts and shop floor.  Monitor underutilized equipment and move or sell equipment that cannot be justified.  50% of the tires we purchase are recapped (can be recapped up to 3 times), reducing our cost and the amount of oil used to produce a new tire.  Recycle all used tires instead of sending them to landfills.  Use recycled rubber trailer decking, reducing the harvesting of our forests.  Recycle batteries, old batteries are recycled to new.  Extend City equipment oil change intervals from 3,000 miles to 6,000 miles – a savings of hundreds of gallons of oil annually.  The City operates several hybrid vehicles.  MVD participants in the City’s recycling of all paper products  85% of MVD paper products purchased are from recycled paper.
