AHOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR SHAROD LAMOR “RODDY” WHITE ON HIS EXTRAORDINARY ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS, AND TO COMMEND HIS SUCCESSFUL EFFORTS TOWARD IMPROVING SOCIETY THROUGH THE RODDY WHITE KEEP THE FAITH FOUNDATION AND STOP THE VIOLENCE SOUTH.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are pleased to commend Sharod Lamor “Roddy” White for his outstanding athletic accomplishments and for his significant work in helping others; and

Whereas, born on James Island on November 2, 1981, Roddy White was a foursport letterman and standout in football, baseball, soccer, and wrestling at James Island Charter High School; and

Whereas, after high school, he attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham and played wide receiver for its football team, eventually leading the Blazers to their first bowl game appearance, a spot in the 2004 Hawaii Bowl; and

Whereas, White’s success as a college football player led to his being drafted by the Atlanta Falcons as the 27th overall pick in the 2005 NFL draft. In his first season in the NFL, he ranked fourth among all rookie receivers, and by the 2007 season, White tied for eighth place among NFL wide receivers in receiving yards with 1,202 yards; and

Whereas, in 2008, he finished fourth in the NFL in receiving yards with a careerhigh 1,382, also breaking a team record held since 1981. In addition, White amassed eightyeight receptions and seven touchdowns during that season, both career highs. On December 16, 2008, White was named to the 2009 Pro Bowl. White set the singleseason record in receiving for the Falcons in 2010 and the team’s singlegame record in a half and in a game. In 2011, his one hundred fifteen catches led the NFL for the season; and

Whereas, a member of Payne Methodist Church, White is the proud father of three fine children, and he sponsors two outstanding charities, Roddy White Keep the Faith Foundation and Stop the Violence South; and

Whereas, in order to shape communitiesthe Roddy White Keep the Faith Foundation identifies, promotes, and supports improved physical activity, enhanced environments, and provision of educational growth opportunities by offering an annual summer camp held at James Island Charter High School; and

Whereas, Stop the Violence South promotes peace, finds positive solutions to help communities resolve conflict, and seeks to help young people become positive citizens through education and awareness. Stop the Violence Southroutinely offers free events with music, vendors, motivational speakers, and more in a wholesome, safe, and positive family environment in the Charleston TriCounty area; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives appreciate the outstanding work that Roddy White provides through the Roddy White Keep the Faith Foundation and Stop the Violence South, and are grateful for the South Carolina All Star Weekend with Roddy White that he is bringing to Charleston from June 8 through June 10, 2012. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, by this resolution, recognize and honor Sharod Lamor “Roddy” White on his extraordinary athletic achievements, and to commend his successful efforts toward improving society through the Roddy White Keep the Faith Foundation and Stop the Violence South.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Roddy White.
