The MSTU

The MoscowStateTechnicalUniversity is one of the oldest and biggest polytechnic educational institutions in Russia.

The history of our institution dates back to 1830, when Emperor Nicholas I confirmed the "statute of the industrial school" to open in Moscow. Russia's developing industry needed skilled labor in many trades. So, the aim of the new school was to train skillful artisans with a solid theoretical background to improve and spread skills in various trades all over Russia.By 1868 the academic standards of the school were so high that it was reorganized into a special institution of higher learning (ImperialMoscowTechnicalSchool or IMTS). Its major task now was to train mechanics in construction, engineering and manufacturing. The IMTS was financially supported by the Government and industrialists. Its management was democratic. Its teaching staff boasted of many talented scientists who maintained contacts with the West. All these circumstances helped the School to achieve outstanding successes in manufacturing processes and practices in the chemical, food and textile industries, metal and wood processing, and structural mechanics.

In 1918, the School organized several research institutes which eventually developed into independent structures, separating from their parent. It continued to specialize in training engineers for the machine-building and instrumentation industries.

In 1930 it was named after N.E. Bauman, a Russian Revolutionary.

In 1938, the School opened new departments of defense profile: armoured vehicles and tanks, artillery, and ammunition. In 1948, a department of rocketry was added.

In 1989, the School was conferred a new name: the BaumanMoscowStateTechnicalUniversity (Bauman MSTU).

The following famous scientists and specialists have graduated our university: among them are Zhoukovsky, Tupolev, Lebedev, Chudakov,Korolev, Dollezhal and others.

The University is distinguished for high-level scientific and engineering training of students, extensive relations with industries, good traditions, and high professional and moral requirements which both the professors and students feel obliged to meet and maintain.

Presently there are more than 18000 students, concentrating their studies in science and engineering, and approximately 1000 post graduates, working on their Ph.D. thesises at MSTU. The most-stated reason for them to enter here was the University's academic reputation.

Opportunities offered by MSTU attracted a lot of international students from different countries all over the world.

The University is working in close cooperation with RussianAcademy of Science and with hundreds of leading institutes and industrial enterprises.

At present the MSTU has 8main faculties:

  1. Materials and Technology
  2. Informatics and Control Systems
  3. Special Machinery
  4. Robotics and Complex Automation
  5. Power Engineering
  6. Fundamental Sciences
  7. Engineering and Business Management
  8. Radioelectronics, Laser Technology and Medical Equipment

Also the MSTU has five branches in Moscow and its suburbs.

Each faculty consists of a number of specialized departments and is headed by the Dean. The head of the university is Rector.

The course of studies lasts six years. According to MSTU curriculum, its academic offerings are: bachelor's degree programs, master's programs, Ph.D. programs, pre-University programs, and internship. All training programs meet state educational standards and carry national accreditation. Graduates of all degrees earn appropriate certificates.

All the faculties are accommodated at several buildings well equipped to provide everything necessary for educational process. There are well prepared laboratories, the library is full up with literature on technical disciplines, many research centers keep in touch with MSTU, involving students in research work. So, now the university gives clear opportunities to its students to become wellprepared staff. And they, on their turn, are to construct the future of our country in approaching several years.
