Name : Position Title : Communications Manager, Hariyo Ban Reports to : Chief of Party, Hariyo Ban

I. Major Function

The USAID-funded Hariyo Ban Program’s overall goal is to reduce adverse impacts of climate change and threats to biodiversity in Nepal. The program is led by WWF Nepal through a consortium of partners including Care Nepal, National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) and Federation of Community Forestry Users Nepal (FECOFUN). Under the direct supervision of the Hariyo Ban Chief of Party, the Communications Manager will be a member of the Hariyo Ban Program core team, responsible for ensuring the implementation of the communications strategy for Hariyo Ban. A major task from now until the end of the program is ensuring effective communication of the Program’s results, successes and lessons through different communication means, both within Nepal and globally. This involves working closely with core team members and all four Hariyo Ban consortium partners to produce communication materials and events, harmonizing and synchronizing their communication efforts. The Communications Manager will be responsible for coordinating quality control of all Hariyo Ban’s outreach materials including branding, media content, publication series and presentations. He/she will also oversee communication of Hariyo Ban’s stand on local and global issues of environmental concern in an appropriate way.

II. Major Duties and Responsibilities:

1. Serve as a custodian and executant of the Communications Strategy for Hariyo Ban In close coordination with the Chief of Party and other Hariyo Ban Program staff, ensures implementation of the Communications Strategy of Hariyo Ban, periodically reviewing it in view of changing ground realities and program focus. The strategy identifies key behavior changes that are desired to achieve Hariyo Ban’s objectives, the messages involved, target audiences for these messages, and communication methods to reach them. The Communications Manager will ensure that the strategy is in line with program needs, and coordinate financial and human resources to ensure completion of these strategic actions.

2. Engage media to promote Hariyo Ban Engages with media as indicated by the strategy, as one means to ensure communication of key messages and lessons coming from Hariyo Ban, and to promote information about Hariyo Ban objectives and activities.

3. Coordinate production of Hariyo Ban’s outreach materials, publications and events Based on the communication strategy, update and execute the schedule of all regular publications. This work will escalate as Hariyo Ban produces results, analyses and lessons, and strives to communicate them by the end of the program. Coordinates with the appropriate Hariyo Ban partner staff to ensure timely production of regular and one-off publications, other communication materials, presentations, etc. Ensures high quality production of all materials in line with the core partners’ communication standards and other guidelines where they exist. Manages production of communication products produced through the core team, including coordination of editing, proofing, production and distribution process. Oversees and supports the organization of communication events for Hariyo Ban, including preparation of materials and presentations. Promote the use of local language to the extent practically possible including internet-based materials.

4. Ensure Hariyo Ban’s communication legacy is created and in place

1 May 2015 Working closely with Hariyo Ban core team, consortium partners, relevant government officials and USAID, defines Hariyo Ban’s communications legacy and ensures that it is effectively produced and put in place so that it continues to be available and used after Hariyo Ban closes.

5. Support Hariyo Ban partners to communicate about the program and its findings Provide Hariyo Ban information and materials to Hariyo Ban’s core partners, Government of Nepal, USAID and other partners to play their roles in implementing the Hariyo Ban communication strategy, and for their own communications work. Provide overall harmonization and leadership for the consortium’s communications, respecting the communication aspirations and needs of each partner, and providing technical assistance where needed. Ensure that communication materials are appropriately branded for the core partners, recognizing the contributions that each makes.

6. Collaborate with USAID, and ensure USAID branding Regularly interacts with USAID (directly and indirectly) to see that its requirements and expectations are met generally in terms of Hariyo Ban’s communication activities. Provides communication information to USAID on a regular basis. Ensures that USAID branding and marking guidelines are followed in all Hariyo Ban communications, unless there are official exceptions.

7. Provide communication coaching and training As needed, provides communication coaching or training to staff of Hariyo Ban consortium partners and core team, and other partners as needed, to effectively communicate Hariyo Ban messages.

8. Any other duties Any other duties in relation to the above as assigned by the Supervisor.

III. Supervisory Responsibility

Provide programmatic supervision to the Communication Associate for consortium (not WWF-specific) communication activities. Provides requisite communication direction and support to grantees as appropriate. Manages contracts with consultants and companies for producing communications products including editors, designers, proof-readers, printers, and web consultants. Supervisory role for interns and volunteers as and when required.

IV. Working Relationships

Internal: Works as a senior team member on the Hariyo Ban Program core team, interacting closely with team members. Interacts regularly with WWF Nepal staff with a special focus on those involved in Hariyo Ban, including in the two landscapes of Hariyo Ban. Interacts with WWF network communication staff.

External: Works closely with CARE, FECOFUN, NTNC, other Hariyo Ban partners including Government of Nepal, and USAID.

V. Minimum Requirement

Knowledge: A Mater’s degree, preferably in mass communications or a related field. IT knowledge especially the use of audio-visual, web and designing tools will be a strong advantage.

Experience: Candidate must have at least six years of outstanding experience in a similar position/publications production/communication work. Experience in environment/development field is strongly desirable but not essential.

Skills and Abilities: The ideal candidate for this position will have strong management skills, with great ability to see the big picture and move multiple assignments forward, effectively prioritizing and juggling tasks, and working to deadlines. Experience in multiple publications production management is essential. A high level of organization and attention to detail is needed, as well as a high level of enthusiasm for his/her 2 May 2015 work. This position requires strong interpersonal and team-player skills; being assertive yet diplomatic; using initiative, innovation and good judgement; and having good written communication skills, preferably with Nepali as well as English language. The candidate should have strong IT skills including Microsoft Office programs and preferably design software. Must be able to travel to the field from time to time, in sometimes rugged conditions.
