Course Description:

This is a one semestercourse that is intended to provide a rigorous training of dance in a broad sense, covering all technical aspects of, ballet, jazz, and modern dance. Time will also be spent on development of kinesthetic awareness, anatomy, fitness, cultural awareness, music/art appreciation, creativity, and a variety of other skills. This is a performance-based class and students are required to dress out daily and actively participate in each lesson.

Instructional

Strategies: The following instructional strategies will be used to enhance student achievement: Rehearsal/in class practice, use of manipulatives, advanced graphic organizers, interactive word walls, collaborative pairs, cooperative groups, writing across the curriculum, reading across the curriculum as well as additional strategies that meet the needs of the content area.

Grading Scale: This class will adhere to the Atlanta Public School Board Grading Policy, which consists of the following grading scale:

A90 and above

B80-89

C70-79

FBelow 70

Evaluation:The final grade in this class will be determined by using the following weights for each category:

Tutorial:After school tutorial will be available for all students interested in getting extra help or for enrichment. Tutorial will be held each Wednesday before or after school unless otherwise noted.

Teacher/Parent

Communication: An open line of communication is encouraged between teachers and parents. Email communication is likely to receive the fastest response. Conferences may be scheduled by contacting Mrs. Warner.Parental visits are encouraged; however, it is the policy of Young Middle School that all visitors must report to the office before going to other parts of the building. A “Visitors Pass” will be issued as evidence that this procedure has been followed.

Absence/Make-
Up Procedures:Each student is responsible for obtaining and completing missed assignments without student/teacher interaction. Students will have the number of days absent plus one day to make up work following an absence. When a student is suspended from school, each teacher on the team is required to prepare sufficient assignments for the student during teacher on the team is required to prepared sufficient assignments for the student during the duration of his/her suspension. The team will have twenty four hours from the day that the suspension was assigned to have the work in the main office for pick up.

Recovery:Opportunities designed to allow students to recover from a low or failing cumulative grade will be allowed when all work required to date has been completed and the student has demonstrated a legitimate effort to meet all course requirements including attendance. Teachers will determine when and how students with extenuating circumstances may improve their grades. All recovery work is due two weeks before the end of the semester.

This syllabus is a general outline of the course and is subject to modification.

DisciplineStudents in this class are expected to adhere to the rules and policies of Jean Childs Young Middle School and Atlanta Public Schools as stated in the Student Agenda. Students are also expected to adhere to the expectations and procedures of the JCY Dance Department.
