Wooden Spoon Marauders – The Future is Sevens!

As those of us involved in the UK Rugby Sevens Circuit are aware, the game and the structure behind it are changing rapidly. With the next big sevens event being Rio in 2016 this development and the growth that it brings is set to continue beyond the Olympics. A recent Sevens forum held by the RFU identified the following areas where the game is surging forward.

  Huge growth in people wanting to play - increased exposure of Sevens Rugby

  More tournaments than ever, more teams than ever, at home and abroad

  Sevens specialist players now becoming the norm

  More ability to identify appropriate playing levels by tournament/competition

  Longer season – now Easter to end of August, and better weather

  Insurance no longer an issue – all year round cover now in place

  Sevens Rugby offers players a different environment in which to play, and is easier for spectators to understand and more dynamic to watch

  The fun aspect of sevens rugby tournaments both on and off the field is attracting more people

  Aspiration to develop players and individual skills is growing as more specialist coaching roles become available

In order to meet the challenges that are arising from this continually increasing focus on sevens the Wooden Spoon Marauders have announced that, as part of a new long term strategy, they are launching a new Performance Centre for Sevens Rugby. This will encompass:

  A regional base – for training, coaching and assessment

  Managed by a strong Sevens coaching team

  Guest, top level coach appearances

  Nutritional and health advice

The ‘Marauders 7s Performance Centre’ will be launched for the start of the 2016 Sevens Season, with the first training sessions planned for the beginning of May. We are pleased to announce that Camberley RFC in Surrey, have entered a joint agreement with us for the running of this exciting new venture. Steve O'Meara, Camberley’s Chairman of Rugby, commented “This exciting new venture has major benefits for us all. Working in partnership with the Wooden Spoon Marauders to develop senior players who want to play sevens rugby will put us at the forefront of adult sevens in the UK. At the same time the Marauders coaching team will be assisting us in identifying and coaching new sevens specialist coaches who will develop junior players (age U17 and above). For the first time we will be able to put a strong focus on developing younger players into the sevens arena”.
