Objective

-  To know that values strongly evident in a society reflect and influence the values of the individuals who comprise that society.

-  To rank in order of importance, the things that have most meaning to you.

Concept

Technology causes societal change; societal change causes value change; value change causes value dilemma (uncertainty).

Generalizations

1.  Values are ideas, concept, principles, or combinations of these that you hold in high regard. They are motivating forces in human behavior.

2.  Values are built up slowly over time.

3.  Values are very personal.

4.  Some values are unconscious.

5.  Values of extreme importance are applied to many aspects of life while others may be demonstrated only in a few situations.

6.  Value patterns can develop into a ranking or hierarchy.

7.  Ranking develops after value conflicts are resolved and guides us toward consistency in decision making,

8.  Parents transmit values to their children.

9.  Other influences on values include…. Role models, media, religion.

Concept

Goals depend on values so you must be aware of what is important to you.

Generalizations

1.  Goals are targets, destinations, purpose that individuals and families are willing to work for.

2.  Goal setting is a continual process.

3.  Goals can be either short term or long term.

4.  Short term goals are the goals obtainable in the near future. This may be a week, a month or even a year depending on your age and outlook.

5.  Long term goals are targets that you plan to reach further in the future, but are often based on short term goals.

6.  Goals are sometimes dropped because the cost in effort and there time required to reach them is unreasonable.

7.  Resources is what we have available to help us reach our goals. Resources are limited but goals are not.

8.  Resources are two major types: Human and Non-Human.

Concept

A positive attitude about yourself is an essential ingredient to satisfy the need for acceptance.

Generalizations

1.  We tend to categorize individuals according to the way we perceive their behavior.

2.  Self-Concept is the perception you have of yourself.

3.  Self-concept is influenced by the sum of all your experiences.

4.  Important factors in the development of self-concept included

a.  Heredity factors

b.  Environmental factors

c.  Cultural factors

5.  All inherited characteristics came from your parents by way of genes.

6.  Genes (protein molecules that determine your physical characteristics at the time of conception) determine your height, proportions as well as your facial features and basic mental capacity.

7.  An acquired characteristic is a personal quality or trait not inherited or learned from your environment.

8.  Environmental influences such as family and friends can influence your appearance and intellectual development.

9.  Peer pressure influence of a group of people on an individual that causes the individual to do what the group is doing.

11.  The way you perceive the sex roles people play and the way that perception matches up with the current attitudes in your culture constitute a part of your self-concept.

12.  Identification with role models can have positive effects if you are challenged to improve yourself.
