MTRCB On-the-Spot Poster Making Contest a Success

The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) successfully held an On-the Spot Poster Making Contest for High School students in Quezon City on 22 October at the Quezon City Experience (QCX), Quezon Memorial Circle.

Present in the contest was MTRCB Chairperson Eugenio “Toto” Villareal who led the opening remarks together with MTRCB Vice Chairperson Emmanuel “Maning” Borlaza. Chair Toto, in his welcome address, shared with the young participants MTRCB’s efforts in strengthening the format of Matalinong Panonood para sa Pamilya at Lipunan nina Juan at Juana in promoting cultural sensitivity towards Indigenous Peoples (IPs) and Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs).

He also added that while IPs and ICCs have been referred to as “minorities” in the past, we can attribute the emergence of multicultural Philippines through the dynamic appreciation of the rich culture of our indigenous peoples and communities and that… at the end of each day, there are no sectors in society, for we are one, as Filipinos. Chair Toto ended his address by encouraging the participants to give their best and create their masterpiece with “great love.”

The poster-making event is a prelude to the upcoming MTRCB’s 4th Family and Child Summit happening on 03 December. The poster-making event aimed to raise the consciousness of the society, especially the youth, on the proper depiction and treatment of ICCs and IPs. This event was also meant to empower students to express their best perspective on how to positively depict IPs and ICCs in movies and television. This was to promote the summit’s theme, “Matalinong Panonood Tungo sa Pagsulong ng Kamalayan Para sa Katutubo” (Discerning Viewership Towards Advocating Consciousness for the Indigenous Peoples).

The panel of judges was composed of UP Fine Arts Professor and Chairman of the Board of Judges Ruben De Jesus; graphic designer and UP Fine Arts Professor Cesar Hernando; graphic designer and Art Trade MNL founder Noel Izrael Lacson; award-winning actor and MTRCB Board Member Robert Arevalo; and singer-actress Ms. Garie Concepcion.

Jayson Tapang from North Fairview High School got the first place. Prince Jomar Mercado from Bagong Silangan High School grabbed the second place title. Amos Ulang from San Bartolome High School got the third place. Awarding of winners will be held at the summit proper in December. In addition, the winner’s poster will be used as the Family and Child Summit theme logo and poster.

There to support this event was the head of the activity, Board Member (BM) Atty. Ricardo “Jojo” Salomon, who gave the contest instructions and mechanics. Board member Nathaniel “Njel” De Mesa entertained the participants through an OPM song naming game, while BM Elizabeth “Bibeth” Orteza Siguion-Reyna gave out the closing remarks. Also present in the event were BM Noel “Boyet” Del Prado, BM Gabriela “Gaby” Concepcion, BM Krip Yuson, and former MTRCB Chairperson, now BM, Ma. Consoliza Laguardia.◘
