Course outline: In study skills, students develop and strengthen their academic and organizational skills. Students explore individual strengths and weaknesses, and learn strategies for success in their academic and arts courses. Topics include time management, active listening, reading textbooks, taking notes, highlighting, reviewing notes and material previously covered, preparing for tests, concentration, use of the library and online sources, and managing homework. Students will work on computer skills such as keyboarding, internet usage, word processing, and other applications.

The objectives of this course are to:

·  Homework/project planning

·  Reading skills

·  Organizing at home & school

·  Note-taking strategies

·  Test-taking strategies

·  Communication & affective skills

·  Writing strategies

·  Typing Techniques

Grading Scale: Notes / Binder / Daily agenda, Student Planner 60%

Homework/Class work /participation 40%

* Daily agenda/Student Planner

·  Composition Notebook

·  Highlighter

·  color pencils

Optional Materials/ Highly Recommended

·  One ream of computer paper

·  Personal Hole puncher and Stapler

Entering the classroom: enter quietly and take your assigned seat before the bell rings. Take out your materials and start working on the Review activity.

Attendance

*To be taken at the beginning of the class. Be sure to be in your assigned seat.

*Please don’t interrupt me while I’m taking attendance.

When you return from an absence:

*Be sure you bring a note for all excused absences.

*Pick up any worksheets or missed work from the designated area.

* Make- up work is due next class.

Discipline:

*All school policies will be followed.

1st incident: verbal warning.

2nd incident: Time out and 5 minutes after class.

3rd incident: Time out and 10 minutes after class

4th incident: The student’s parent or guardian will be called.

5th incident: I will send a referral to the office.

Please refrain from:

*Talking while someone else is talking.

*Interrupting the class.

* Writing on desks.

*Using cell phones.

End of the class:

*Before dismissal all students must be seated.

*The area around your seat must be picked up.
