School Uniform Guidance

Written: January 2017

Approved by the Governing Body:

Review Date: September 2018 Policy Aims:

 To set a high standard of presentation for pupils at school  To make clear to the whole school community the expectation of uniform  To promote a sense of pride across the federation and at each individual school  To have a positive impact on behaviour and attitudes in school  To develop a sense of community and belonging to their school and federation

We feel that by wearing our school’s uniform, pupils not only look smart but gain a sense of identity and pride in our school. Whilst enjoying the benefits of working and collaborating together as part of the Heights Federation, we also value the unique identity of each individual school and by wearing the uniform of that school we can develop children’s sense of pride and identity in each separate educational community.

The school uniform comprises:

Black footwear should be comfortable, sensible and low-heeled, as children will be wearing this footwear for playtimes as well as in class. Structured boots are suitable for the winter weather, however trainers are not permitted as part of school uniform. Trainers should be worn for morning movement activities such as 1K and Zumba but should be changed once back in class. Flip-flops and open toed sandals are not suitable for summer on the grounds of health and safety.

School Bags

We recommend that all children have a school bag, with the school’s logo, for the purpose of carrying reading books and homework, etc. to and from school. Book Bags are the perfect size for school equipment. Other variations on this ‘Book bag’ design are available if required for additional kit such as PE or swimming items. Please see the office staff at your child’s school for information about book bags purchase and replacements.

Personal Items

Mobile phones, watches with alarms and inbuilt games should be left at home. However, children may wear a watch on the understanding that it must not be a distraction to their learning; and that the school will not accept any responsibility for loss or damage. Where children in KS2 travel to and from school alone and need a mobile phone for safety we ask that it be handed into the school office each morning and collected at home time.

PE Kit

Across the three schools of the federation for Physical Education pupils require a PE kit comprising:

 White T shirt or polo shirt and black shorts for warmer weather and indoor PE  Plain jogging bottoms and a sweatshirt for colder weather when PE takes place outdoors – NO HOODIES to comply with Health and Safety regulations.  Trainers and/or pumps

Quite often children will work barefoot in the hall, e.g. during gymnastics lessons, as this helps to develop an appreciation of form and style. A child’s PE kit must be at school every day. (We expect older children to become entirely responsible for remembering to bring their kit to school.) General Appearance

As well as adhering to wearing the correct uniform we also feel it important that children maintain standards of presentation through their personal appearance. We ask that children do not wear nail varnish, make-up or any visible temporary, transfer tattoos.

Make-up, in any form, is not permitted for school. Jewellery, other than small stud earrings, is not permitted. The school cannot accept responsibility for lost or damaged studs. Children should remove their studs for swimming and PE or come to school without them in on these days as staff are unable to remove these for pupils. For this reason we ask that children refrain from piercing their ears during term time and wait to have them done in the 6 weeks holidays so that they can take them out again once school starts in September. Long hair should be tied back. This is particularly important in order to prevent the spread of head lice and for health and safety reasons, particularly where children will be working in PE. Hair accessories such as slides, hair bands, ribbons, and bobbles should be simple and manageable.

Parents are asked to ensure that children’s hair styles are tidy and appropriate for school.

Disability Equality Impact Assessment

This policy has been written with reference to and in consideration of the school’s Disability Equality Scheme. Assessment will include consideration of issues identified by the involvement of disabled children, staff and parents and any information the school holds on disabled children, staff and parents.
