MORRELL’S MUSINGS

From Press Secretary, Neil Morrell

Saturday Scene - Sat 27 September 2014

On a day where our 2014/15 F.A.Cup interests lie with Raynes Park Vale who are our remaining survivors in the competition quite understandably our focus commences at Lodge Avenue where they and hosts Billericay Town went head to head for the right to a place in the 3rd Qualifying Round just two steps away from where football league clubs enter the competition. Both teams had suffered midweek defeats but barely five minutes had been played when Billericay were awarded a penalty which Richard Halle converted for the home side putting 'Vale' on the back-foot so early on. Vale suffered a further set-back on 25 minutes when their keeper was red carded for a handball offence. Bravely though and to their huge credit Raynes Park Vale kept their hosts to just a one goal advantage right up until the 78th minute despite being a man down at which point Ricky Sappleton doubled the home sides advantage meaning elimination was drawing ever closer despite their brave efforts.

Barely two minutes later though Simon Moore pulled a goal back for 'Vale' to raise hopes among the travelling contingent but they could not find an equaliser and so went out of the competition. Nevertheless, Raynes Park Vale have done the League proud with their exploits in the FA Cup this season.

League wise Premier Division leaders Cove remain four points clear of second placed Ashford Town following a 3-2 victory at Chertsey Town but have played one more game than The 'Ash Trees' who thanks to goals from Mark Bitmead, Tom Brunton and Jack Beadle secured a 3-1 success over afternoon visitors Farnham Town. Jack Dillon was on target for the visitors who currently find themselves in the bottom three having played more games than other teams around them and in their 12 league games played so far this season have amassed six points.

Molesey remain in third spot following their trip to Frimley Green which saw them run out 4-2 winners in what looked to be a highly entertaining encounter. Having fallen behind to a Nick Thumwood goal midway through the first half Molesey were back on level terms thanks to Moses Spencer. Louis Hibbert restored the lead for Frimley just before the hour mark but Jamie Linegar made it 2-2 on 61 minutes, and with the clock ticking down Jamie McShane notched two goals for the visitors in the final seven minutes to ensure a good 4-2 victory was secured come end of play moving them up to third spot.

Hot on their heels are Camberley Town who thanks to goals from Emmanuel Quarshie and Perry Coles a minute from time secured a 2-0 victory at Hartley Wintney.

Slipping down to 5th spot are Spelthorne Sports who suffered a second league defeat on the trot as visitors Epsom & Ewell ran out 3-0 winners.

Among the goals Saturday were Windsor who once again attracted the highest attendance in the league for their encounter with Horley Town. 234 were present to see Kane Jones bag a hat-trick during the first half of play. Horley pulled one back before half-time but the hosts eventually romped to a 5-1 victory as second half additional efforts from Kyle Lucas and Rob Lazarczuk justified the large attendance.

Elsewhere in the Premier Division Mole Valley SCR and Badshot Lea shared six goals in a very highly entertaining affair. Having led twice during the first half through Andy White efforts, Badshot Lea then led 3-2 with fifteen minutes remaining, only to be pegged back six minutes from time when Mole Valley’s Rich Monan brought an end to the goal bonanza for the afternoon. On target for Badshot Lea in this encounter were Gavin Muir (20 and 75 minutes) and newly signed Dan Simmonds on 28 minutes.

A four goal first half saw Knaphill register their first home league win of the season against bottom club Hanworth Villa, 3-1, courtesy of goals from Alex Lumley (2) and Scott Costello for the 'Knappers'. Matt Baines notched Hanworth's goal.

It was back to back home wins for Colliers Wood United as this time around it was Westfield who left the Wibbandune Sports Ground empty handed as the hosts secured a 2-0 victory.

Banstead Athletic following a tremendous 2-1 victory over at Farleigh Rovers sit pretty at the top of Division One as I write thanks to goals from Jamal Okai and Aaron Murphy in a close encounter that saw the hosts take a 25th minute lead through Ellis Burke only to concede twice in the final eleven

minutes.

Hot on their heals are AFC Croydon Athletic who hit three without reply at Ash United. On target for the visitors were Jordan Martin 24 minutes, Dan Penfold 51 minutes and Louis Blake four minutes into added time.

Third placed Worcester Park took a first minute lead through Tom Neale in their home encounter with Bedfont & Feltham but within two minutes it was all square again as Jason Pinnock slotted home a penalty and then within a further five minutes the visitors through Alexander Afful made it 2-1. Five minutes into the second period Kumanie Scarlett made it 3-1. 'Park' did pull back another fifteen minutes from time thanks to Sam Cheeseman to give a final score-line of 3-2 to the visitors.

Elsewhere a Jarmel Rodney 28th minute goal was enough to see hosts Sheerwater bag maximum points in their home encounter with Alton Town.

Top Scorers in Division One Saturday were Cobham who despite falling behind to C.B.Hounslow came away from their trip emphatic 6-1 winners.

Another club who hit six on their travels were Epsom Athletic (6-2) at Sandhurst Town, up and down Eversley & California secured a good 5-2 victory at Chessington & Hook, and last but not least Staines Lammas on their travels were too good for hosts Dorking and secured a 4-1 victory.
