Benchmark SS.8.5.1 - Citizenship and Participation: Explain the responsibilities of citizens in a representative democracy.

Overview: There are a number of challenges that we face in terms of creating a sustainable society. Fortunately, there are efforts currently underway, in the form of both research and practice, to help make our world a cleaner, safer, healthier, and more sustainable place to live. As American citizens, we all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and do our part to contribute to these efforts.

Task: Individually, or in groups no greater than 3, you will do the following:

  1. IDENTIFY and EXPLAIN a current issue or challenge related to sustainability. Your issue should deal with one of the five categories we have discussed as a class (see the illustration below).
  2. RESEARCH a current solution(s) to your selected issue. EXPLAIN what is being worked on or being implemented, and discuss any challenges the solution faces.
  3. CREATE and PRESENT what you discover to the class in a format of your choice. You may choose to create a PowerPoint, an informative flier or brochure, poster, etc.

Your product must explain the issue with detail and relevance.

Provide real life examples.

The Solution:

Your product must explain what is currently being done to address the issue.

The solution must be researched, not just explained based on what you heard or know.

Provide real life examples.

The Presentation:

Your product must be detailed, organized, creative, and neat.

Be sure to title your presentation.

Pictures are a MUST. At least 3 relevant images (printed okay).

You will be presenting to the class.

Presentations may also be put up for display in the school library.

* THIS IS A SELF-REGULATED PROJECT THAT WILL BE DONE ON YOUR OWN TIME. IF YOU CHOOSE TO WORK IN A GROUP, YOU ARE CHOOSING TO SHARE RESPONSIBILITIES AMONG YOUR GROUP MEMBERS. UNDERSTANT THAT GROUP PROJECTS WILL BE GRADED AS A WHOLE.
