Study Notes for Unit Two Test

Dear Students, Parents/Guardians:
I wanted to provide you with a mini-notes page that might help you
better prepare for the Unit Two test!

* Matter is anything that has mass and takes up space.

* Volume is the amount of space taken up by an object.

(To find the volume of a rectangular prism use the formula V = l x w x h)

(To find the volume of a liquid use a graduated cylinder and measure in liters or milliliters.)

(To find the volume of irregular figures use the displacement technique we practiced in class.)

(The most accurate measure is the bottom of the curve of a liquid in the graduated cylinder ....this is called the meniscus)

* Mass is a measure of how much matter is in an object.

-Mass is not affected by gravity

-Mass is measured in grams or kilograms

-To find mass you use a balance.

* Weight is a measure of the gravitational force on an object.

-Weight changes depending on where you are in the universe.

-Weight is measured in the SI Unit - - Newton

-For weight we use a spring scale or regular scale.

* Inertia is the tendency of an object to resist a change in motion.

(The more mass an object has the more inertia it has - - remember the bowling ball and soccer ball example)

*Density = mass / volume

* The less dense items float on top of more dense items.

(If you have three liquids in a cylinder the more dense liquid will be on the bottom)

* Please refresh yourself on physical property, physical change, chemical property, chemical change. Refer to the notes we took in class.

* Know the physical and chemical properties from the book for section two and three!

* Vocabulary.

* The 3 study guides you have done will be a good review!

***Good luck studying!***
