SREB Math Ready

SREB Math Ready

Kristen DeAngelo

Welcome toSt. JosephCatholicSchool!I am excited to have the opportunity to teach you this senior math course and prepare you for your college math classes.

Throughout this course, we will learn various materials. We will begin with algebraic expressions and move into linear equations. We will continue with equations and move into quadratic and exponential equations and inequalities. We will also have an opportunity to explore statistics.

The purpose of this course is to prepare you for college level math courses. We will take in depth looks at everything we go over and have group work in which we will expand our thoughts and understanding of each lesson. Students will have the opportunity to share with others and find various ways to explore the same problem. One of the goals of this class is to help students put real life situations into mathematical concepts.

This course does not have a hard copy text book. Two copies of the manual will be in the classroom at all times. These will not be allowed out of the classroom. Each student will have a copy of the student manual that will be given to them on the first day of class. The student manual is to remain in the classroom unless instructed otherwise. Each student will need a binder to keep their student manual booklet neat and easily assessable.

Throughout this course, various activities will require additional resources. Occasionally, the teacher will ask the students for additional items to be brought into the class for activities. The students will be given two-three day’s notice (I will try to give a week’s notice) for these materials. Not bringing in the items will result in a zero for the activity. (NOTE: These items will not be difficult and it will never be more than two items at a time. They will be items like a candy bar or an object from your house that is a specific shape.)

Materials:

2 binders, college ruled notebook paper, pencils, TI brand graphing calculator, ream of paper, 100 ruled index cards

Notes:

One of the binders will be kept in the room with your student manual section of the book.

Flex-binders are nice for one of your binders, but not required. They are binders that you can add, rearrange, etc. but function like a notebook. They have paper, dividers, and graphing paper already in them.

I will not accept any work turned in with on paper with fringes from the paper being torn out of notebooks.

Grades:

I will use the point system for grading and all grades will be able to be seen on PowerSchool with one week of the assigned date.

This course is designed very different from the math classes you have previously taken. There will be a large amount of participation and group work. Participation and completion of daily work will make up approximately half of your grade in this class. Major tests will be given at the end of each unit and quizzes will be given throughout. There will be a mandatory midterm at the end of the first semester and a final at the end of the year. Homework and projects will also be assigned throughout the course.

Rules:

All regular school rules will apply to all students throughout this course. Students must bring their book, pencils, paper, and homework to class each day.Students are tardy to class when they are not seated in their assigned seats when the bell rings.Everyone in the classroom is to be treated with dignity and respect. All school rules will be followed in the classroom.Students must be recognized before speaking or moving about the room. There will be no loud talking.Students are to be prepared to begin class as soon as the bell rings.Students may not go to their lockers or to the restroom during class time.Students are not to touch anything on or in the teacher’s desk, the air-conditioner controls, or the telephone without permission. All students must participate in class activities.Students are expected to raise their hands to ask questions.Students are not to chew gum, eat, or drink in class.
