Regions of Louisiana – Louisiana has five regions. The region we live in is called the Greater New Orleans Area. The regions in the northern part of the state have hills and forests. The regions in the southern part of the state have flat land and many wetlands and bayous.

Wetlands- Wetlands are lands that are mostly covered in water. Wetlands can be found in the southern part of our state. The most common types of wetlands in Louisiana are swamps and marshes. A swamp is a wetland that has water covering most of the ground and has trees. A marsh is a wetland that has water covering most of the ground and has grass.

What is culture? Culture is the behaviors and attitudes of groups of people. Every group of people in the world has their own culture. Culture is made up of many things: dress, celebrations, food, religion, music, and language.

Culture in Louisiana: Louisiana has a very unique culture. We have many celebrations in Louisiana including Mardi Gras and festivals. Louisiana culture is also very famous for our food. We have many famous dishes including Gumbo, beignets, and jambalaya. Music is also a very important part of our unique culture. Jazz music was invented in New Orleans and is played at many celebrations. Zydeco music is music from Louisiana.

Major Louisiana Cultures- many types of cultures have added to the culture we have today.

Native Americans- We still use Native American words in our language in Louisiana. For example the Mississippi is Native American for Big Water.

French- Many words that we use are also French such as beignet and Mardi Gras. Mardi Gras was also brought to Louisiana from the French.

Spanish- the Spanish culture has influenced our foods with dishes like jambalaya.
