1. Rewrite the following situations using the appropriate introductory verb. You CANNOT use SAY or TELL

1. ‘You should go to bed,’ he said.

4. ‘No, I did not kill him,’ the suspect said.

2. Change into reported / direct speech

1. ‘They’ll be landing at London Airport tonight,’ he said. ‘But if the fog gets any thicker, the plane may be diverted.’

2. Peter advised her to leave a message to her mother because otherwise she could be worried.

3. ‘Why are you teasing your sister?’ the mother said. ‘You know it makes her unhappy.’

4. Mary suggested going for a walk after dinner and added that she needed some fresh air that night.

5. ‘I wish I were older and had a job so I would go and live somewhere else,’ said the young girl.

6. ‘Whose car did you borrow last night?’ I said to him, ‘and where did you go?’

7. He wondered what he should do if she didn’t answer his e-mail that time.

8. ‘If I press my ear against the wall, I can hear what the people next door are saying,’ said the little boy.’ But don’t do it. It is not correct,’ his mother said.

9. ‘While we were having lunch, John phoned you,’ said my sister. ‘He may call again later today.’

10. ‘Why don’t you take Leslie to the Palace?’ her mother said. ‘It will be open to the public next weekend.’

11. Tom said that if he were me, he’d tell her the whole story before anyone else did.

12. ‘Did you go to France last week after all or did you stay at home?’ her friend said to her.

13. ‘Shall I cook dinner tonight?’ he said to her.’You look really exhausted.’

14. ‘Search the house carefully,’ the police officer said.’The thieves might still be there and they could be armed.’

15. ‘Have you read the book or not?’ I need it by next Friday.’ She said.

16. Peter said that the match had started when he got to the stadium and added he had had to walk all the way from his house because he couldn’t find a taxi.

17. ‘Will the workers go on strike or will they come to work’’ the employer said.

18. ‘You had better not go swimming in the lake,’ she told them. ‘The water is filthy.’

19. ‘I’m sorry I spoke to you like that, mum’ he said. ‘I won’t do it again.’

20. She explained that she had written to him two days before and that she wondered why he hadn’t rung her up yet.
