REMOVAL AND REFITTING REAR MOTORCYCLE WHEEL

Stage 1

Place motorcycle on level floor making sure the side stand is down.

Stage 2

NOTE : There are several types of paddock stand on the market in this exercise we will use the Abba stand which is probably the most popular and the easiest to use.

Place Abba stand either side of bike and select the correct swinging arm/ frame fitting for the particular model of bike. Attach Abba stand to the bike making sure the stand does not foul the foot pegs, gear linkage or rear brake foot lever. When you are satisfied all is clear raise bike off ground.

Stage 3

Using a socket of the correct size remove spindle nut and place in a safe place. Some models of bike use a castellated nut secured by a split pin if this is the case remove split pin before trying to undo nut.

NOTE : Use extreme caution when working near exhausts that could still be very hot if engine has just been turned off. Use heat proof gloves if in any doubt.

Stage 4

NOTE : If vehicle has ABS braking the abs sensor probe must be removed by undoing the two retaining bolts before starting stage 4.

Undo brake calliper bolts and remove calliper from calliper bracket / spacer, support calliper on a stand as it will still be connected by a rubber brake hose to the braking system and damage can occur if the pipe is stretched or chaffed. Do not undo or remove the chain adjuster bolts as the chain would have to be re adjusted while refitting of the wheel.

Stage 5

Remove main spindle and push wheel forward as far as possible to allow removal of the drive chain. When chain has been removed from sprocket, pull wheel back until it clears the swinging arm and secure the chain loosely to the same. Now that the wheel is out, remove wheel spacers, sprocket and Cush drive rubbers.

Stage 6

Fitting tyre : Refer to Method Statement & Safe Working Practices manual.

Stage 7

NOTE : It is good work practice to use a small amount of copper grease on wheel spindle and the threads of all nuts and bolts as this will facilitate easier future removal.

After tyre has been fitted check Wheel Bearing, Cush Drive Rubbers, Sprocket, and Chain along with Wheel Spacers for wear / corrosion, and replace Cush drive rubbers, sprocket and wheel spaces to wheel and then align wheel in swinging arm. Push wheel forward until there is enough space and refit the drive chain. After making sure that the calliper bracket / spacer is aligned refit main spindle after cleaning and a light application of high temperature grease, through wheel and then push wheel forward until chain adjuster blocks are in the correct position. No adjustment of the chain will be necessary providing the chain adjuster bolts were not loosened during the removal process. (See instructions in stage 4).

Stage 8

NOTE : If spindle nut is of the castellated type a new split pin should always be fitted.

Before refitting brake calliper / spacer bracket to original position ensure to check condition of Calliper / Brake Pads and torque bolts to recommended setting then fit spindle nut and torque to recommended settings. Pump rear brake lever until operating efficiency has been established.

Stage 9

Check all nuts and bolts for tightness using a torque wrench where necessary, lower and remove Abba stand and park using side stand, the work is now complete.
