Shelley Crossland

Shelley Crossland is an experienced Occupational Therapist with over 19 years’ experience of working with older people within a mental health setting (predominately community based as part of a community mental health team). An experienced practice placement educator, supervisor and clinician who has had involvement with service development locally and nationally as part of the College of Occupational Therapists specialist section, older people. Her key areas of interests and development focus around mental health services for older people, falls and student involvement. Some of her key achievements to date are:

  • Falls champion for mental health service for older people on the trust based falls looking at falls and falls reduction across community health service.
  • Co-author on the second edition of "Falls Management" for Occupational Therapists which is to be published by College of Occupational Therapists (Published in March 2015).
  • Practice Educator of the year 2014, East Midlands, from University of Northampton
  • Completion of book chapter “A nurturing environment for older people” Toxic Institutions to Therapeutic Environments edited by Penelope Campling, Steffen Davies and Graeme Farquharson
  • Development of the Falls Management document published by COT, November 2006
  • Development of the use of Model if Human Occupation based documentation within the mental health OT service, including the use of the MOHSOT tool
  • Co facilitator on the enriched model of care course with H May, mental health services, older people, Leicestershire Partnership NHS trust (October 2014 – March 2015)
  • Development of a Falls information leaflet used across clinical areas within Leicestershire Partnership NHS trust (2015)
  • Student placement coordinator for both Derby and Northampton students
  • Completion of APPLE accreditation and reaccreditation for student education
  • Involvement in development event looking at student placement experiences with LPT
  • Acting as a preceptor within the preceptorship process
  • Supervision of junior staff on an ongoing basis
  • Falls champion for mental health service for older people on the trust based falls looking at falls and falls reduction across community health service.
  • Guest Lecturer at University of Northampton on the BSc (hons) Occupational Therapy course on dementia to final year students.
