The 2nd Pannonia Congress of Pathology, organized by 6 Central European countries, was supported by the Pathological Society of Great Britain and Ireland. The main topics covered were thyroid pathology, lymph nodes non-hematopathological diseases, selected topics in uterus pathology and quality control in pathology. Each countries’ pathological societies suggested speakers for each topics, and the organizers tried to cover the cytological diagnostic- and molecular pathological aspects as well. Two outstanding slide seminars were held on the last day of the conference: altogether 17 cases were presented by experts. Cases presented at one of the slide seminars were related to the main topics, the other – organised by Dr. Michal Michal from Plzen (Czech Republic) – covered rare diseases and new entities in pathology. Since this year the Hungarian Society of Pathology celebrates its 80th anniversary, this occasion was an excellent opportunity to remember the ancestors of contemporary pathology by exhibiting its history on 7 posters, and also to celebrate with parties both on Thursday and Friday. Dako Central Europe brought authentic Czech beer to the Welcome Party, which made this evening even more special. The president of the Congress, Dr. Janina Kulka presented a historical slide seminar during the Congress Dinner, remembering the great Hungarian pathologist, Edmund Krompecher.
The conference was honoured by the participation of world known experts, also from England and Ireland: Dr. Gabrijela Kocjan (London) covered the topic of problems in thyroid cytology, Dr. Zsolt Orosz (Galway) discussed the differencial diagnostic problems of metastatic lymph nodes. Two excellent keynote lectures were held: Dr. Michael Wells (Sheffield) gave an overview about novelties in uterine pathology and Dr. Fatima Carneiro (Portugal) discussed qualitiy control issues of molecular pathology in case of gastrointestinal malignancies. Dr. Thomas Krausz from Chicago, US was giving a lecture about the nodal inclusions mimicking metastatic cancer and he also presented a case at one of the two slide seminars. Dr. Anna Sapino from Italy and Dr. Dietmar Schmidt from Germany gave outstanding plenary lectures. Dr. Dontscho Kerjaschki (Austria) gave the PCP Special Lecture about the results of his research concerning the lymphatic spread of breast cancer.
Three best posters were selected from the 45 posters exhibited.
As a pre-congress session, a very interesting discussion was initiated about the „brain drain” of pathologists from Eastern to Western Europe, moderated by Dr. Fredrik Bosman and Dr. József Tímár. Prof. Bosman suggested to write a position paper about the problem in one of the upcoming issues of Virchows Archive.
The official congress bureau of both conferences was K and M Congress, who did a great job much to the satisfaction of the participants. There were 321 participants from 25 countries and 4 continents at the congress.
