PAINTING 2 & 4 – KEY STAGE 1

SKILL / SUGGESTED ACTIVITIES / ARTISTS
WORKS OF ART / VOCABULARY / CURRICULUM LINKS / RECOMMENDED MATERIALS
To Control the lightness and darkness of colours using black and white.
To use sketchbooks for experimental purposes.
To reinforce good working practices in the care of equipment. / To explore mark making with paint using knowledge of tints and shades.
Using the chosen colour, paint a shape near the centre of the paper or in sketchbooks.
Mix up tints by adding white, and shades by adding black to the main colour. The pupils can only choose one colour plus black (to create shades) and white (to create tints). Begin with the chosen colour ie red and paint some marks on to the paper. Now add a small amount of white to the red in the palette. This will make a deep pink. With this tint, paint some more marks. Add more white to the tint in the palette. You now have a paler pink colour. Add to the painting.
Repeat the process until the tint becomes almost white. Record each new tint in sketchbooks as you go along. Begin with the colour (red) again and repeat for shades. Use these to paint other areas adjoining or overlapping the first.
Experiment with other marks: lines, spots, splashes, swirls, twirls, zigzags etc. Sometimes use white or black as well as the other tints and shades already mixed.
Try as many interesting lines, shapes and patterns as possible.
Use edges of card to print lines over the painting.
Demonstrate to the children how to clean and store the brushes and palettes after use. / Pop artists
