Other States School Nurse Certification Requirements

WASHINGTON

Degree - Must have completed a baccalaureate or higher degree program in nursing from a program accredited by the National League of Nursing Accreditation Commission or the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education.

License - Must hold a valid Washington State license as a registered nurse.

Course - Must have completed prior to, or within 180 days after application, a 30 clock hour or 3 quarter hour (2 semester hrs) course approved by the Professional Educator Standards Board which will include study in schools and society; human growth, development, and learning; American school law; legal responsibilities of the ESA; and the responsibilities of the specific ESA role in a school setting, including the state learning goals and essential academic learning requirements; or

Candidates who were trained out of state may, in lieu of the course, present verification of a state-approved certification program in the role as a school nurse; or

3 years of out-of-state experience in the role under appropriate certification if certification was required.

Holders of the School Nurse Services Credential shall be authorized to perform the following services:

• Conduct immunization programs pursuant to California Education Code, Section 49403, of the California Code of Regulations

• Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of pupils

• Interpret the health and developmental assessment to parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals directly concerned with the pupil

• Design and implement individual student health maintenance plans, incorporating plans directed by a physician

• Refer the pupil and parent or guardian to appropriate community resources for necessary services

• Maintain communication with parents and all involved community practitioners and agencies to promote needed treatment and secure reports of findings pertinent to educational planning

• Interpret medical and nursing findings appropriate to the student’s individualized education program and make recommendations to professional personnel directly involved

• Consult with, conduct in-service training for, and serve as a resource person to teachers and administrators

• Develop and implement the health education curriculum

• Act as a participant in implementing a comprehensive health instruction curriculum for students

• Counsel and assist pupils and parents in health-related and school adjustment services

•  Teach health-related subjects under the supervision of a classroom teacher

Requirements for the Preliminary (School Nurse) Credential

Individuals must satisfy all of the following:

1. Official transcripts showing a baccalaureate or higher degree from a regionally-accredited college or university

2. A photocopy of a valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California. If you do not hold the license, contact the Board of Registered Nursing, 1747 North Market Boulevard, Suite 150, Sacramento, CA 95834, 916-322-3350 or www.rn.ca.gov.

3. Completed application (form 41-4), and, if not previously submitted to the Commission, a completed LiveScan receipt (form 41-LS). Out-of-state residents must submit two fingerprint cards in lieu of a LiveScan receipt. If submitting fingerprint cards, current fingerprint processing fees must accompany the application packet in addition to the application processing fee. Fingerprint cards may be ordered by sending an email to the Commission at .

Requirements for the Clear Credential

Individuals must apply through a California college or university with a Commission-approved school nurse program and must satisfy all of the following requirements:

1. Verify possession of a Preliminary School Nurse Services Credential

2. Verify possession of a valid Registered Nurse License issued by the State of California

3. Complete two years of successful experience as a school nurse (If the Preliminary School Nurse Credential was issued on or before July 1, 1981, this experience is not required.)

4. Complete a Commission-approved school nurse program and obtain the formal recommendation of the college or university where the program was completed

Term of the Credential

The preliminary credential is issued for five calendar years and is not renewable. The clear credential is issued for five calendar years and must be renewed online at www.ctc.ca.gov.

IDAHO

SCHOOL NURSE

RULE: IDAHO STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION (IDAPA 08, TITLE 02, CHAPTER 02)

027.03. School Nurse Endorsement. (3-29-10)

This endorsement is valid for five (5) years. Six (6) semester credit hours are required every five (5) years in order to renew the endorsement. Initial endorsement may be accomplished through completion of either requirements in Subsections 27.03.a. or 27.03.b. in addition to the requirement of Subsection 27.03.c.:

a. The candidate must possess a valid nursing (RN) license issued by the Idaho State Board of Nursing, and a bachelor's degree in nursing, education, or a health-related field from an accredited institution. (5-8-09)

OR

b. The candidate must possess a valid professional nursing (RN) license issued by the Idaho State Board of Nursing and have completed nine (9) semester credit hours from a university or college in at least three (3) of the following areas: (5-8-09)

  1. Health program management;
  2. Child and adolescent health issues;
  3. Counseling, psychology, or social work; or,
  4. Methods of education instruction. (5-8-09)

Additionally, each candidate must have two (2) years' full-time (or part-time equivalent) school nursing, community health nursing, or any area of pediatric, adolescent, or family nursing experience. (5-8-09)

SCHOOL NURSE (INTERIM ENDORSEMENT)

RULE: IDAHO STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION (IDAPA 08, TITLE 02, CHAPTER 02)

027.04. Interim Endorsement - School Nurse. (3-29-10)

This certificate will be granted for those who do not meet the educational and/or experience requirements but who hold a valid professional nursing (RN) license in Idaho. An interim certificate will be issued for three (3) years while the applicant is meeting the educational requirements, and it is not renewable.

INFORMATION:

A valid Registered Nurse (RN) license issued by the Idaho State Board of Nursing is required.

NOTE: An Institutional Recommendation will not be required.

1. In order to apply for a five (5)-year renewable Pupil Personnel Services Certificate with a School Nurse endorsement, the applicant must meet the requirements for the School Nurse endorsement as outlined by the state board or verify completion of the following;

a. Nine (9) semester credit hours in three (3) of the following:

  1. Assessment of student health
  2. Child and adolescent health issues
  3. Counseling, psychology, or social work
  4. Methods of education instruction

b. Two (2) year's full-time (or part-time equivalent) school nursing, community health nursing, or any area of pediatric, adolescent, or family nursing.

ARIZONA

INITIAL CERTIFICATION

All Registered Nurses seeking initial certification through the Board to practice or continue to practice as a school nurse shall submit a completed application. The applicant must be currently licensed and in good standing as a Registered Nurse in Arizona.

Nurses who have never been certified as a school nurse in Arizona is not required to provide proof of educational requirements until renewal of certificate is required. Initial certification as a school nurse is valid for 3 years.

School nurses who were certified by the Department of Education (DOE) and who are applying for certification with the Board of Nursing shall also provide proof of completion of all of the following educational requirements for each level of completion.

RENEWAL REQUIREMENTS: Official sealed transcripts must be sent directly from the school or official documents verifying the educational requirements for the renewal levels listed below. If you have previously submitted documents that can be used to verify educational requirements for this renewal, you do not need to request or submit duplicate documents.

First Level

Requirements for applicants who have previously been certified as a School Nurse by DOE or have had initial certification for 3 years

Initial Level and First Level Certifications are good for three years.

Second Level

Requirements for School Nurses who have had one previous renewal with DOE or who have had First Level Certification for 3 years

Second Level certification is valid for six years.

Third Level

Requirements for School Nurses who have had prior renewals with DOE, or who have had Second Level Certification for years, or who have had Third Level Certification for 3 or more years.

Three semester hours in each:

 school nurse practice course

 physical assessment of the school-aged child course

 nursing care of the child with developmental disabilities

A Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing

OR

Three semester hours in:

 community health theory

 management theory

 either 3 semester hours of upper division or graduate credit in nursing or health related subjects from a regionally accredited institution, or 45 hours continuing education related to nursing practice

Six semester hours of:

 upper division or graduate credit in nursing or health related subjects from a regionally-accredited institution

OR

Ninety contact hours of:

 continuing education related to nursing practice

Third Level certification is valid for six years.

Subsequent renewal is valid for six years.
