University of Nottingham Scholarships 2003/2004

Guidance Notes For Applicants

1.   What do the scholarships offer?

Nine-month scholarships are offered in a variety of fields in the social sciences. These enable scholars to undertake research and do not lead to the award of any degree or qualification in the UK. The available fields are:

East Asian Studies, Economic and Social History, Economics, History, Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies, Law, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Scottish History, Scottish Studies, Social Policy, Social Work, Social Anthropology and Sociology

The scholarships aim to provide opportunities for independent postgraduate study in the United Kingdom for students who are engaged in or intending to pursue postgraduate work in their own country and who have demonstrated both academic excellence and the potential to become leaders, decision-makers and opinion formers in their own country. Subject to satisfactory progress, the scholarships lead to the award of a Masters.

The scholarships are available for study for LLM in Human Rights Law, MA in Politics and Social Policy, MA in Politics and Critical Theory, MA in Comparative Politics and MA in International Relations.

2. Who is eligible to apply?

Applicants will normally be expected to be:

A.  be nationals of, and normally resident in, the selected country during the academic year in which they apply for the award ; applicants who are temporarily out of the country (for a total period of less than three consecutive months) may be treated as being resident.

B.  already hold (or expect to hold by the time of taking up the award) a degree equivalent to an upper second from a UK university

C.  normally be between 23 and 35 years of age

D.  have passed an appropriate English language test by the time of taking up the award

E.  have not already spent a full academic year or more studying in a higher educational institution in the West.

F.  return to their home country at the end of their scholarship period to continue their studies / work there.

3.  How does the selection procedure work?

a)  Short-listed applicants will be invited for an interview and an English language test in their home country during April 2003. You should keep yourself free for these dates. You will be informed by the local British Council office whether you have been shortlisted or not.

b)   Interviews will be carried out by representatives of OSI and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. In certain cases, there may also be a panel member representing the interests of the University.

c)   The final awards will be decided jointly by the University, the FCO and OSI- Budapest. Candidates will be informed by the University.
