Peer Mentor Job Description
**Note: All applications due in 306 Burleigh Hall, April 8 by 5:00pm**

Summary:

TRIO Student Support Services pairs an upper-class student (mentor) with a group of incoming first-year and transfer students to help them make a smoother transition into college life. This program strongly encourages students to work hard, and promotes academic excellence. The program also encourages the development of meaningful and resourceful relationships among all students and staff.

Essential Job Functions:

Meet regularly with assigned protégés to help track progress and ensure protégés are making a comfortable and healthy adjustment to campus life.
Demonstrate the ability to address concerns protégés may have in a calm and professional manner
Assist with TRIO sponsored events upon request.
Set goals for progress/achievement sought to be accomplished during each meeting with protégés.
Attend weekly mentor staff meetings with the Program Coordinator and Program Specialist and collaborate in the development of mentoring events and activities
Maintain documentation of contact with protégés
Maintain visibility and contact with students.
Collaborate with the Project Coordinator on all activities to ensure alignment of activities with program goals and objectives including updating publications and other administrative tasks
Serve as an enthusiastic advocate and role model for fellow students. Be knowledgeable of campus resources and positive aspects of campus life
Participate in meetings, information sessions and on TRIO recruiting activities for prospective participants as assigned by the Program Director or his/her designee.
Participate in all staff trainings and meetings as determined by the Program Coordinator
Maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty, and staff across all departments and divisions.
Perform other related duties as assigned

Required minimum Qualifications:

Education, and/or Experience:

Must be currently enrolled students, have earned at least 30 college credits, have attended the university for two semesters, and earned a minimum GPA of 2.5; Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet and database software; Strong communication skills, both oral and written; Demonstrated ability to effectively instruct, mentor, and guide students

Knowledge & Skills, Abilities:

Ability to display effective communication skills, both written and orally

Ability to advise and lead students both independently and in groups

Ability to work with students, staff and faculty

Ability to organize, use initiative and plan effectively

Ability to maintain details when analyzing and evaluating information

Ability to manage multiple priorities effectively

Ability to interact with diverse populations in a positive, friendly and welcoming manner

Must possess effective organization and event planning skills

Must be flexible, open and adaptable to change

Must be able to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment

Must have strong office technology skills (MS Office, PowerPoint and Excel)
