Museum Visit Paper

***Get a selfie of yourself at the museum. If you do not have a camera/ camera in your phone bring something, like a program, from the museum that shows you were there.***

1st paragraph: Introduce the museum you went to. Museum name, location, date you went. What kind of museum is it (ex- contemporary art, American art, modern art, etc.)? What special exhibits were at the museum when you were there? You can find this information in the program. How did you get to the museum?

2nd paragraph: Describe your first impressions of the museum. What did it look like? How did you feel in the museum? How does this museum compare to other museums you have been to before? What about the museum makes you feel comfortable or uncomfortable? Did you enjoy the visit? Why or why not?

3rd paragraph: ***Choose one of the artworks in the museum.*** Who is the artist? What year was it made? What is the title? What is it made of? Describe what it is. What do you see? Be specific and give lots of details. ***If you are allowed to take photos in the museum, it could be helpful to take a photo of the artwork to look at when you are writing your paper.*** How big is the artwork? What are the colors of the work? What textures do you see? Is it overall dark, light, or a combination of both? Do you see any repeating shapes (2-D) or forms (3-D)? How does the artist create a sense of depth or space in the work?

4th paragraph: What other types of art are exhibited near the one you chose? What do they have in common? How is viewing an original work of art different from seeing it online or on a poster? Does it change at all as you move around it? What do you think the artwork is about? Why do you think so? What do you think the artist was trying to say? Explain why. Is there any description that gives additional information about the artwork or artist? If so, summarize what it says. What is your reaction to the artwork? Do you like it? Why or why not?

5th paragraph: Who do you see working at the museum (security, volunteers, gallery educators, shop and restaurant staff, etc.)? ***Find someone who works at the museum and ask them: What they do in a typical day for their work? How does their work help visitors to the museum? How do they interact with the art in the museum? What is the purpose/mission of the museum? Do you think the museum is meeting their purpose/mission? Explain why or why not.
