Syllabus
Mrs. Peterman Room 314
Course Objective: The students will understand, describe, define, give examples of, and apply core concepts in the following areas:
**The Number System
**Expressions and Equations
**Functions
**Geometry
**Statistics and Probability
Within each of these areas, students will be expected to perform the mathematical operations and/or procedures accurately and efficiently and explain how they work in real-world and mathematical situations.

Other Resources to be used:
Students may use a pencil or blue or black pen for assignments. Loose leaf paper is preferred for homework assignments. Students are asked to supply a separate notebook for note-taking. This should be a composition notebook. (Hint: Take advantage of back to school low prices and purchase several notebooks now!) Notebooks will be taken up and graded on test days. Notebook checks are for checking notes only; not homework assignments. Calculators may not be used at the beginning of the year but can be used at a later time as announced by the teacher. All 8th grade students are required to purchase a fraction calculator. Any calculator with fraction capabilities is acceptable. Students will be shown examples in class. Solar powered calculators are recommended.
Course Description:
- Homework / classwork checked and recorded daily
- Tests assessing mastery of unit work
- Most tests include extended response questions relevant to the material covered.
Grading Scales:
90-100% = A
80 – 89% =B
70-79% =C
60-69% =D
59% =F
Students receive points for classwork and homework assignments. Quiz scores and test scores are also recorded as points. Tests and quizzes are weighted as 50% of the grade and classwork/homework points are weighted as 50% of the grade. A letter grade is given based on the total percentage and according to the school grading scale (above).
