Description:

Course to include: scientific knowledge and skills pertaining to nutrition, health, general care, and breeds of identification for small animals such as dogs and cats. Leadership development will be provided through the FFA.

Students will:

-  Demonstrate employability and social skills relative to the career cluster.

-  Relate small animal technology to current world trends.

-  Describe the distinguishing characteristics of the different breeds of small and specialty animal species.

-  Describe and compare the physiology and anatomy of small animal species.

-  Describe and compare the process of reproduction of small animal species.

-  Analyze the nutritional requirements of small and specialty animal species.

-  Describe the care, handling, sheltering, and grooming of small animals.

-  Investigate diseases and plan a health maintenance schedule in small animals.

-  Evaluate the management and marketing of small animal services and products.

-  Maintain records on a supervised agricultural experience program and be able to summarize and analyze results in making financial decisions.

-  Utilize FFA activities as an integral component of course content and leadership development.

-  Apply science, math, and communication skills within the technical content.

Small Animal Care and Management Second Edition by Dean M. Warren

Required Materials:

Three ring binder with dividers labeled:

-  Bell work, Notes, Worksheets, Classwork, Quizzes/Exams, Special Projects & SAE

Blank notebook paper

Pen (blue or black ink) or pencil

Methods of Grading:

Students will be evaluated on their classroom participation, class and home work, special projects, quizzes, and unit and final exams. This class will consist of many hands on activities students are expected to participate in. Attitude and willingness to work will be taken into consideration. I will always announce at least one day in advance if students need to dress in attire that may get dirty while participating in an activity.

Grading Scale:

A 90-100%

B 80-89%

C 70-79%

D 60-69%

F 0-59%

Homework Policy:

Any homework that is assigned should be finished and turned in the next day school is in session or upon the return of the student to school.

Make-up Policy:

An unexcused absence will result in an automatic zero for the day of the absence. If the absence is excused it is the STUDENT’S RESPONSIBILITY to contact the instructor within 3 SCHOOL DAYS upon returning to school. Failure to do so will result in a zero for all missed assignments.

Make-up work will be located in the according folder on the bulletin board in back of the room. Students should go straight there to find their work and turn it into the corresponding class basket located on top of the book shelf. If you need help, you need to ask me. I will not hand you your missed work, you must retrieve it yourself.
