REPORTS:

Men’s Selection Committee:

Downs Challenge

The Selection committee, with the coach, have finalised the teams for the Downs Challenge. The event is scheduled for 11th September at the Toowoomba Club on Lindsay Street Toowoomba (opposite Queens Park). We require six teams of Fours plus an official’s team.

Our approach for this event was;

 Use the day to give an opportunity to some new players

 Arrange for the new players to play in their preferred positions and to select team combinations with a mix of new and current squad representatives, where possible.

 Advise our current squad that we intend to trial new players in the Downs Challenge so we keep all players onside. (Note: I have received positive feedback from all players on this approach)

 Request players to move to coloured shorts / trousers (not white) but have some flexibility to minimise the cost to the new players in the teams

 Apply the guidelines in the Selection Policy when considering team combinations. This has caused some issues and with the support of the Men’s President we are addressing the issues as they arise.

The Men’s teams are;

2. Over-60 Gold Quad Series

The last scheduled inter-District event for 2016 is the Over-60 (Senior) Gold Quad Series which involves;

Brisbane, Gold Coast Tweed, Cunningham and Gateway. The date is Sunday 23rd October at a venue to be advised.

Early preparation for this event has commenced and involves advanced, mid-week training sessions with the District coaches about every 6 weeks. The next session is scheduled for Wednesday 14th September at the Windsor Bowls Club from 10am to midday.

Dennis O’Toole is using the sessions as a training opportunity for other coaches where he can coach-the-coaches. Thank you to the coaches now involved; Dennis O’Toole, Alan Brown, Leon Carrall and Rod Palmer.

Keith Brown (Chairman BDBA Men’s Selection Committee)

Ladies Selection Committee:Our Brisbane District Representative teams were able to win against the Gateway District in a Challenge match held at Everton Park on 5 June. It was a wonderful result because it’s been a few years since we’ve been able to beat the Gateway District. Thanks to Everton Park and all the Players involved in this successful event.

We have had training Squad Sessions on the 3 July at Windsor and at Ferny Grove on the 14 August with Coach Dennis O’Toole and a Development Squad session on 31 July at Everton Park. Both sessions went really well especially the one with the Development Squad where we had 13 players attend together with some of our club coaches.

We have our next Challenge Match coming up against the Caboolture District this Sunday at Windsor Bowls Club. This involves 20 players which includes 1 Novice Team. Another win would be a really good result for our District. Then of course on the 11 September it is our annual Men’s andLadies Challenge against Downs District at Toowoomba this year. This is always a very competitive event and the ladies are all looking forward to it.

In regard to Challenge matches our Ladies are doing really well and again the Selectors are really pleased with the performance of our players and if we can get more of them attending our training sessions our results are sure to keep improving.

Ladies Match Committee:The District Competitions this year have not been very well supported.

The Ladies Executive decided earlier in the year, that if less than 8 Nominations for any competition were received, it would be played as a Round Robin. This happened in the Club Champion of Champions Pairs and Fours Competitions.

Pennants were also not too successful. Midweek received an uneven number of nominations, so that when divided into two Sections, there were 5 teams in one Section and Four in the other. Result – the Section with only 5 teams each got to play the other Clubs once, with one bye. The same occurred on Saturdays, with the non First Division teams only having three nominations.

There was also a lot of unhappiness that Saturday Division 1 players, also played midweek.

I am attempting to put together a questionnaire for Clubs to see how Pennants for next year could be improved- even maybe putting in 2 Bowl triples for midweek, so as to encourage more players to take part.

It has also been suggested to me that the dates for our Challenge matches ought to be changed, if this can be agreed with the other Districts, so that more Challenge matches could be played earlier in the year, before District Sides.

Moved by Geoff Manserand seconded by Sue O’Toolethat reports be received.

General Business:

2016 Downs Challenge: Website: Selected players will be posted on website. Transport: The men will be travelling by car. It is anticipated that 8 cars will be used. Reimbursement is $60 per car ($480) The Ladies will be travelling by 20 seater mini bus at a cost of $640. The Ladies will pay $8 per head for the bus hire and BDBA will pay the balance. Green fees and Lunch: The cost is $22 per head. The Players pay $12 each and BDBA pay the balance. Officials only pay for bus transport.

2017 District Sides: The Ladies will be playing at Tugun and the men at Cooloongatta. Reflection Tower 2 will be rebooked for this event as it is central to both venues.

2017 Champion of Club Champions Zone Play Off: Brisbane District is to host this event. The men and Ladies are hopeful of this being a combined event. Gateway will be approached at this year’s Zone Play Off re combined event being played on a weekend.

District Calendar: It is anticipated that the Combined Calendar will be completed for meeting of 9 September and will be ready for Delegates meeting in October.

Ladies Sunshine Coast Challenge: Sunshine Coast will be asked to consider changing the date of this event in 2017 to March/April.

Metropolitan Ladies Competition: The BDBA Ladies has been experiencing a problem in Div One pennants for some years due to a lack of teams playing. Brisbane North, Cunningham and Gateway will beapproached to ascertain if they have/are encountering this problem. This may lead to developing a shared solution to what is likely to be a problem beyond just our District. In the meantime, the Ladies are looking at undertaking a survey to refine and improve pennants within the District for next year.

Ladies O’60 Competition: This is an event that the Ladies may consider in 2017

Brisbane v Downs Challenge: The Men are having ongoing discussions with Downs on holding an O’60’s, mid week event at Laidley.

Playing Shirts: Geoff has a limited number of men’s playing shirts in stock. Purchase of more shirts would depend on player demand.

Combined Conditions of Play: The men’s section is preparing a Combined Districts Conditions of Play in consultation with other Districts.

Juniors: As one District Club now has 7 junior players it may be prudent for that club to have A Junior Coordinator.
