INTERNAL EXCLUSION
The Internal exclusion sanction is given to pupils who carry out an act that is totally unacceptable and extremely inappropriate within the normal environment of our school. It is used to support a fixed term “external” exclusion, where pupils are given the opportunity to reflect and correct their extreme behaviour, by carrying out subject-based work yet still being present on school campus.
The sanction is carried out in FB30 from 8.50am to 4.30pm. During this time the pupil will be allocated a cubicle, where they will be given work to complete each session. If appropriate work is unavailable, sheets of lines will be distributed, highlighting the advantages of following the school code of conduct.
When the pupil arrives at school, they will be met by a member of the Senior Staff and taken via the front entrance (if possible) to the main reception area. From there they will be taken by the appropriate DHOC to FB30 for 8.50am start. Throughout the day a number of staff will supervise the room, monitoring the excluded pupil each session. The daily sanction will finish at 4.30pm. During their time in I.E. the pupil will have an isolated break and lunch from the rest of the school.
Once the sanction has been completed, the re-admission meeting will take place the following day; times agreed by all parties. The meeting will involve the parents/carers of the pupil, the pupil and a representative from the College. During the meeting, the College will complete the re-admission form, write a brief summary of the target agreed and on its conclusion, distribute copies to the parent/carers and school for signing.
For a number of set days after the completion of the sanction, the pupil will be on an electronic and hard copy monitoring card for the necessary day(s), highlighting the agreed target discussed in the meeting.
1 day in I.E. = 2 days on card
2 days in I.E. = 3 days on card
3 days in I.E. = 5 days on card
4 days (+) in I.E. = 8 days on card.
Once completed, College will contact home with the outcome. PROCEDURES FOR INTERNAL EXCLUSION
For a pupil to be placed in Internal Exclusion, the listed procedures must be followed so that all eventualities have been explored and the decision made had not been taken lightly or in haste.
1. Remind the member of staff initially involved to enter the incident on Behaviour Management (Sims).
2. The appropriate SLT/HOC/DHOC Teacher investigates the incident.
3. By using the blank C.C.Y.D. statement sheets (Kept in the DHOC`s room), witness statements and other appropriate/necessary information must be gathered.
4. Once the investigation has been concluded, the incident will be discussed (utilizing the written statements etc …) with the appropriate College, IE Manager and the Head Teacher, to determine what sanction should be given.
5. The decision made must then be written and entered as “Resolved” on Sims and sent to all necessary parties a.s.a.p., so that ALL are kept informed.
6. The College will then contact home, explaining the incident and sanction, highlighting the number of days given and the appropriate process required to return to school.
7. The College must complete the appropriate exclusion-recording sheet so that an official letter can be sent home (See JD in HR)
8. A re-admission meeting between home and school must be arranged for the following day (preferred), to discuss the re-integration of the pupil excluded.
9. In the meeting, all relevant materials must be completed and distributed ie re- admission sheet and pupil`s monitoring card.
10. Home must be contacted on completion of the monitoring card. [Type text] [Type text] [Type text]
INTERNAL EXCLUSION PROCEDURES DURING SANCTION
The procedures for Internal and External Exclusion are very similar. Both involve a fixed time of exclusion, yet one is completed at school and the other is completed off site (at home).
When a pupil has been placed in Internal Exclusion the following processes are applied:
On arriving at school, they will be met by a member of the Senior Staff and taken via the front entrance (if possible) to the main reception area. From there they will be taken by the appropriate DHOC to FB30 for 8.50am start.
During session 1 and session 6, the supervisory member of staff must contact the attendance officers to record the presence of the pupil(s) in school. Contact number is 1928.
Work will be provided by the respective departments and collected and distributed to the pupil, by the DHOC. This work will be provided until the sanctioned period has been completed.
If the work is not readily available, the pupil will complete the sheets of lines until the work has been provided.
All work must be attempted/completed by the pupil to the best of their ability.
Throughout the day a number of staff will supervise the room, monitoring and scoring the pupil each session until the end of the daily sanction.
If appropriate PC Warlow, the school`s liaison officer, will meet with the pupil and/or parents/carers to discuss the incident and its possible repercussions.
Those pupils who require medication will have their medication brought to them at the correct time.
All materials provided and work completed by the pupil must be collected from SB30 and returned to the respective class teachers.

INTERNAL EXCLUSION of DOB
Further to our telephone conversation I am writing to inform you of my decision to internally exclude (pupil name) for a period of (no of days and dates). This means that (pupil name) will not access his/her normal timetable but will undertake work provided by his/her teachers in isolation from his/her peers from 8.45am until 4.30pm.
I realise that this internal exclusion may well be upsetting, but I can assure you that this decision has not been taken lightly. This decision has been taken due to (pupil name) (reason).
The school will continue to provide work for the duration of the internal exclusion. (pupil name) will undertake this in a comfortable supervised setting within school for the 7 sessions per day. We will also provide (pupil name) with a supervised break and lunch within school.
A readmission meeting has been arranged for (date and time). I would be most grateful if you could accompany (pupil name) to this meeting. If this time is inconvenient please could you contact me to rearrange as it is vital that you and (pupil name) are there to enable him/her to be readmitted. If this meeting does not go ahead, (pupil name) will remain in I.E. until the issue has been rectified.
Yours sincerely,

FREQUENTLY ANSWERED QUESTIONS ABOUT INTERNAL EXCLUSION
If home do not appear for a readmission meeting but the pupil does, what is the outcome? Pupil is replaced in Internal Exclusion until the issue has been resolved.
If an incident occurs during the day that warrants I.E. can the pupil be placed in I.E. that day? The preferred answer is no as 24 hours should be required to investigate the issue. Also, we do not want the pupil to complete the sanction, without home being officially informed via a letter or with a meeting first.
If an issue involving lack of equipment escalated to a more severe sanction being given, can I.E. be used? No. The issue should never have developed to an exclusion being considered.
Should truancy issues involve I.E.? No. Like External Exclusions, the issue must be dealt with utilizing new or present sanctions in school before I.E.
Can pupils be placed randomly in I.E. while an investigation takes place? No. A pupil can only be placed in I.E. if the relevant and appropriate procedures have been addressed.
What happens if a pupil does not behave in I.E.? They will immediately be sent home with a Fixed Term Exclusion. Let`s not forget home would have been prepared such events. If a pupil behaves very well but does not carry out sufficient work, is the pupil sent home or asked to do the session again? No. The pupil completed the sanction without any fuss. (Like E.E., the school must supply work for an exclusion but it is up to the pupil to attempt or complete the tasks set).
If a pupil misses a number of ASDs, are they automatically placed in Internal Exclusion? No, as other sanctions should be utilized before this exclusion is used.
If a pupil is EE for not completing an IE, do they have to complete the IE session on returning to school? No. Once the higher sanction has been completed, no further sanctions would be expected for the original incident.
When can pupils be placed in I.E.? We must not forget that I.E. is a severe sanction where pupils are placed for carrying out an act that is totally unacceptable within our school. It is one step down from a Fixed Term Exclusion. [Type text] [Type text] [Type text]
Incidents that Warrant Internal Exclusion
It is the school`s intention to utilize Internal Exclusion under the same conditions as pupils being excluded for a fixed term. Pupils therefore placed in Internal Exclusion must, as written in the B.C.B.C. Exclusion Guidance Policy last updated 2/12/14, had carried out an incident that is;
In response to serious breaches of the school`s behavior policy
If allowing the pupil to remain in school would seriously harm the education or welfare of the pupil or others in the school.
Internal exclusion is therefore not a “Dumping” ground or a place that should be treated like any other sanction.

I.E. Rota 2015 – 2016
There are 60 lessons that need to be supervised during the two-week cycle. I, naturally, will have a large portion of the sessions available but your services will be required at some time.
I want to have the least number of staff involved so that consistency can operate.
Example:
Ideally, I would like your sessions to be on the same time each week.
Head-Teacher: 4 sessions (2 each week) 5 Directors: 4 sessions each = 20 sessions (2 each week) 6 Colleges: 2 sessions each = 10 sessions (2 each week) JW: 4 sessions GP: 2 sessions (Plus 2 College) RAW: Remaining sessions including ASD for I.E.
