Here Is an Outline of the Subjects We Are Covering This Term

Superheroes

Year 1

As part of all of our topics we take part in a memorable experience to excite the children and make them want to find out more.

This term our memorable experience is to go to have a cinema experience in school dressed up in superhero costumes. We will have popcorn and a drink and share our favourite superhero stories.

Here is an outline of the subjects we are covering this term:

English

We will be reading the books Traction Man is Here by Mini Grey, Max by Lawrence David and Super Daisy by Kes Gray.

We will be writing incident reports for real life rescues and labelling superhero features like our super senses. Also we will be writing instruction cards for how to be a super-kid around school and at home!

Maths

This half term we will continue to work with Numicon and understanding numbers. We will also be looking at solving one-step addition and subtraction problems as well as learning how to share and count in 2s, 5s and 10s.

Science

In science we will be learning all about our senses. We will be able to identify the parts of our bodies which use the senses and exploring how we use our senses in daily lives. We will be taste testing and investigating hearing too. We will learn words which describe sounds and also tastes, like sour, sweet, bitter, salty and so on.

Art and Design

In art we will be designing and making superhero masks and creating comic book characters.

Computing

All areas of learning will be enhanced using computing as children have regular access to iPads to learn new skills and find out about areas of their topic. We will be looking at using the world web to find and copy images of superheroes and will create montages of our favourite images. We will also begin to learn how to record our own sentences using computers.

PSHE

The focus this half term will be Dreams and Goals along with the rest of the school. The children will learn about real life heroes, like doctors, nurses, fire-service, police officers and how they help us. We will be meeting some real life heroes and interviewing them to find out more about what they do.

RE

In RE we will be learning about symbolism in Christianity and which symbols are important to us in our own lives and our own religions as appropriate. We will also be celebrating Chinese New Year!

PE

The children will learn about all the different skills a superhero needs in Multi Skills. Children will learn about physical skills Children will learn to catch, throw and dribble a ball using their super senses. Children will also learn to balance and use their listening skills to guide equipment, themselves and others around courses. All children will need a pair of trainers or plimsolls in school to wear during out door PE.

HOMEWORK IDEAS!

·  Listen and hum along to the theme tune from your favourite superhero TV programme. Canyou remember all the words?

·  Use information books and the web to find out about Guinness World Record holders andtheir superhuman achievements.

·  Make a flipbook showing the adventures of a superhero stick person!

·  Plan or make a lunchbox fit for a superhero.

·  Make up a song or rhyme about a superhero. You could sing about their strengths and skillsand promote their vision for world peace and harmony.

·  Make a model of a superhero. You could use modelling dough, cardboard boxes and tubes,scraps of material or papier-mâché.

·  Interview someone who works for the emergency services about their job.

·  Who is your hero? Bring a picture of them to school and explain to your classmates why youchose them.

·  Read a newspaper with a parent or watch the news and see if you can spot any stories ofpeople doing heroic things.

·  If you could have a super power, what would it be? Would you be able to fly? Becomeinvisible? See through buildings? Write about some of the adventures you might have.

·  Design (on paper or using a computer) a poster featuring a new superhero such asAnti-Litterman and convey their important message.

·  Make a table of traits or characteristics comparing a villain with a good guy.

·  Take pictures of yourself being a ‘superkid’ at home. Maybe you tidied your room or helpedwash the dishes? Bring your pictures to school to explain to your classmates what you didand how it helped your family.
