Hello Parents! Over the Years, There Have Been Many Questions About How DATA Assignments

Hello parents! Over the years, there have been many questions about how DATA assignments work, which are 5% of your child’s grade in science. Here is an explanation of the requirements.

·  Each student must complete 10 DATA Assignments every quarter to earn the last 5% of their quarter grade. That is roughly 1 DATA assignment every week to stay on track.

·  Your child has been given 2 DATA assignments worth of Terra Tokens (our class currency) to start off the quarter. If they stay organized, they will not lose them and will be able to cash them in for their two final DATA assignments. If they are really organized, they can roll them over into future quarters. Each quarter they will receive 2 more DATA assignments worth of Terra Tokens.

·  There are multiple ways to earn DATA assignments throughout the quarter but the standard assignment that will ensure that each student meets this requirement each week is a Science News Report (described below).

Here are the opportunities to earn 10 DATA Assignments each quarter.

1.  Complete a Science News Report (200 word summary and cover page). These can be done weekly to ensure one Data Assignment each week. (Offered 9x per quarter). Only 1 Science News Report may be turned in each week.

2.  Come Prepared!!! Use Terra Tokens for your Data Assignments. 2 DATA assignments are given to start kids off each quarter or 10 Terra Tokens). If they are not used to leave the room for a forgotten assignment or needed supply in class, students get to redeem them at the end of the quarter. Students can also earn more Terra Tokens for good answers, exceptional effort, and contest wins. Every 5 Terra Tokens =1 Data Assignment. Some students even save each quarter’s Terra Tokens, starting them off with 8 Data Assignments at the start of Quarter 4!

3.  Every time and OAA review study guide is assigned, students have a week to complete it using the guidelines given on the handout. If the study guide for each OAA topic is turned in on time, is done well, and the student earns a 75% or above on the OAA review quiz for that topic, they automatically earn a DATA assignment that week (offered approximately 3x a quarter)!

4.  If a student submits an OAA study guide on-time but fails the OAA Quiz, they can complete an OAA intervention packet or come into Science Intervention by the deadline, retake the quiz, and earn ½ a Data Assignment for a grade of 75% or above.

(more on the back!)

5.  Study Island also helps students to review for the OAA. In addition to the lab grade for completing Study Island on time, students can earn a DATA assignment if they receive an average of 80% or above (Offered 2-3 times per quarter).

6.  Extension activities of class material. Each new chapter we cover has additional practice offered through Data Assignment Extension Activities (offered 2-3x or more per quarter).

7.  Create a Study Guide for an upcoming test or quiz. (Offered 2-3x per quarter).

8.  Science Contests! 1st, 2nd, and third place prizes range from 1-2 Data Assignments or 3 Terra Tokens. (Offered 2 times per quarter).

9.  Become an Assignment Manager in your class (2 people per quarter). Take attendance daily for class and package up handouts for absent students. Pays 2 DATA Assignments at the end of the quarter.

VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: Science News Reports can be done in addition to DATA Assignments earned through an Extension activity, Contest, OAT Review Quiz, Study Island Assignment, and/or through the use of Terra Tokens. This allows you to gain additional Data Assignments in one week. There is no limit as to how many Data Assignments can be earned in one week. The only restriction is that you may NOT turn in more than one Science News report per week. Students often double-up on assignments to pull themselves ahead a few weeks, or catch up if they fall behind a week.
