Harleston Magpies Hockey Club Development Strategy & Recruitment Plan 2012-2017

VISION

Harleston Magpies HC has a vision:

To continue to be at the forefront of hockey in this area providing a friendly, sociable and safe structured environment for men, ladies and children of all ages.

To continue to provide opportunities for all players to progress through our playing and coaching programmes and to encourage each member to reach their potential whether as a player, coach or umpire.

We aim to be a club where all members contribute to our success, however small, to make it a competitive yet social hockey club for them to be proud to be a part of, and also strive to encourage new membership in all categories to enable us to continue to provide excellent hockey facilities to Norfolk and Suffolk.

In the next few years to restructure our existing clubhouse to provide better changing facilities for all and to create a welcoming entrance area. Harleston Magpies Hockey Club HC Development Strategy & Recruitment Plan 2012 – 2017

To pursue excellence on the field of play but not to the detriment of those who wish to play social hockey and to look for constant improvement throughout the club. What is the Ethos of the Club?

 Is your club about development of junior players? YES  Is your club a community club that aims to use hockey as a way of including children or adults from hard to reach areas of the community? YES  Is your club mainly focused on performance/elite hockey? NO  Does your club just play hockey for fun? YES AND NO  Does you club encompass some or all of the above? YES

Where are we now?

HMHC currently provides hockey for men, ladies and juniors, from England Hockey National League standard for Ladies and East Premier for Men through to U10 mini hockey. We run 7 Men’s League teams each weekend plus a Boys’ Development League team. We run 7 Ladies League teams each weekend plus a Girls’ Development League team which we have been doing since the inauguration of the league 6 years ago. We also run an occasional Girls’ Development Second team in friendly games. Numbers are closely monitored each season to see whether other teams could be entered into the leagues. This usually depends on finding adults to run the teams. We enter England Hockey National Cup Competitions for U18 Boys and Girls, U16 Boys and Girls, U14 Boys and Girls, Mixed and Veterans together with Mini Tournaments throughout the county for all ages. We also enter Indoor Hockey competitions at Junior and Senior Level with our Ladies and Mens Teams in National Indoor League Division 1 and enter U18, U16 and U14 Boys and Girls teams in the National Cup competitions in which they have done extremely well over the years. We do need to actively encourage more adults to become members and to play regular hockey, and those we have should be encouraged to be more pro-active within the club. We are the only Norfolk Club with a National League presence and we must be pro-active in trying to attract this standard of player locally whilst maintaining the players we already have. Our members travel to the club from within roughly a 25 mile area encompassing Norwich, Ipswich, Bury St. Edmunds and Lowestoft.

Harleston Town has a population of around 4,000 and the wider South Norfolk area about 75,000. The BEM is about 5% of the population with the largest classification being White Other largely made up from migrant workers (Polish, Lithuanian and Portuguese). The local area has a higher percentage of people in work than the national average. It has a lower percentage of

2 Harleston Magpies Hockey Club HC Development Strategy & Recruitment Plan 2012 – 2017 professional workers and a higher one of skilled tradespersons. The local Schools Sports Partnership has 7 High Schools, a Schools Games Organiser and a Volunteer Coordinator. The local High School - Archbishop Sancroft High School - has four primary schools in its family. Other sports on offer in the local area include angling, bowls, football, judo and tennis. There are two other hockey clubs about 10 miles away.

HMHC offer training facilities for all its members with both pitches in use each evening, times for which are allocated at the start of a season, and also early on a Saturday morning and Friday evening for Under 12 Girls and Boys. Training is equitable with large numbers of Senior Players training weekly and sometimes twice weekly and Juniors from the age of 6 training weekly. The club is based in our own grounds at Shotford Heath, Weybread, with one water-based artificial surface and one sand-based surface, together with a clubhouse with 4 large changing rooms and toilets downstairs + a large clubroom with bar and kitchen facilities upstairs. A disabled toilet has recently been added downstairs and a lift has been installed on the outside staircase to enable the upstairs to be accessible to all.

HMHC is run mostly by volunteers with a structure consisting of a Board, Executive for the day to day running of the club, and various committees, e.g. finance, playing, coaching, youth, social and fund raising all reporting to the executive. A Volunteer Coordinator has been appointed to assist the Chairpersons of the various Committees recruit volunteers. All main posts are voted for at the Annual General meeting with volunteers being brought onto the various committees. We particularly need to encourage younger members to be involved in these committees and decision making as we are a young club generally but with older officials, while bearing in mind we need to get key people into the correct roles. The roles descriptions of the various positions can be found on the website.

Our facilities are available for use within the local community and are regularly used for school hockey, JDC`s, JAC`s and JRPC`s as well as for East Tournaments etc. The Club has links with the local High School, Archbishop Sancroft High School, and the South Norfolk Schools Partnership. All parties are working together to deliver a Quicksticks Festival for primary schools and In2Hockey festival for secondary schools.

The Club takes very seriously the welfare of all its members. The Clubs policies are all on the website and all members sign at the start of each season to say that they have read the policies. A first aid course is organized on a yearly basis with all invited to attend.

3 Harleston Magpies Hockey Club HC Development Strategy & Recruitment Plan 2012 – 2017

The Club has registered with the EHB`s CRB checking service with the Welfare Officer taking responsibility for the vetting of all Junior Coaches, Captains and Volunteers. A risk assessment is carried out each season and recommendations acted upon. Membership details are on Fixtureslive and can only be accessed by a Club Administrator. Relevant medical details are forwarded, with permission, to the relevant team Captains and Coaches by the Youth Development Officers in the case of a junior. The Club has two Youth Development Officers one for Girls and one for Boys who oversee the juniors. We have Level 2 Coaches providing hockey coaching for all ages and standards with many players currently still playing from their early junior days. We have active Level 1 coaches who assist either with Senior or junior coaching and have other volunteers supporting these coaches. We have enough coaches to meet our current needs. However we must encourage Level 1`s to qualify on an annual basis and to progress at least one Level 2 coach a season. We particularly need to encourage more female coaches. Our coaches are involved with the Single System with both Norfolk and Suffolk and JAC`s and JRPC`s are held at the Club. Our young leaders are encouraged to help with the 12`s and under on training nights and on competition days.

Norfolk seems to largely operate a system of Clubs providing two umpires for all home games. HMHC has a large number of player/ umpires. We aim to run a Level I umpires course each season and hope to have 5 umpires qualify and one up graded each season. In future HMHC must target those who enjoy umpiring and would like to progress to umpiring pool matches. Young umpires will be involved with umpiring at Mini Tournaments.

HMHC has a strong social calendar with events for all ages starting with a Club Day the first weekend in September with a BBQ, through to an End of Season Bash with a Disco and Hog Roast for all. Other social events organised throughout the year include Club Quiz Night (Oct), Fireworks Spectacular (Nov), Casino and Cocktail Night (Dec), Social Evening (Jan), Auction of Promises and Spring Draw (March), Senior Club Awards Night (April), Strawberry Luncheon (June), Golf Day (July). A Summer Ball is held every 3rd year.

We are always actively trying to encourage more sponsorship at any level, particularly when we are now still paying off outstanding debts from the two pitches and trying to raise funds to refurbish the clubhouse within the next year or so while the pitches should not require major repairs. Money is put aside each year as a `sinking fund` to help with these improvements. We do have good local sponsorship in the form of signboards around the water-based pitch and sponsorship for the Ladies and Mens 1st teams. A full list of the Club’s sponsors can be found in the Club Handbook and in the clubhouse. The Club has a Publicity Officer. All Captains are

4 Harleston Magpies Hockey Club HC Development Strategy & Recruitment Plan 2012 – 2017

encouraged to write a weekly match report which should be on the Club`s website as well as in the Local paper (Diss Express) and the County newspaper (Eastern Daily Press)

HMHC has its own website containing full details of the club and this is a good method of communication. However, e-mail communication is increasing to keep members informed of all things going on and this method of communication is being utilized more and more. Details of the start of a season, membership forms, training details etc. are all sent by e mail (or by post if requested) to each member and we must ensure that these membership forms ask for an e-mail address for our future records. Members are asked to include on the membership form any skills they might have and are prepared to offer to the Club. During the season a Mike’s Musings (from Mike Denham, a former Chairman) is circulated by e-mail giving details of club happenings with a summary of the previous week’s results, a preview of the coming week’s fixtures, forthcoming social events etc.
