Growing Healthy Habits PBL for Pink, Yellow, Blue, and Green
Project Description: Students will be doing units from the Growing Healthy Habits curriculum developed by educators from the University of Maryland. They will be learning about eating a balanced diet, the differences between store bought and garden grown fruits and vegetables, how plants grow and the parts of a plant, what soil is made of, seed dissection, and the importance of water. Throughout the PBL and when the PBL is over, students will care for their garden in the yard until the fall months.
Driving Question: How does gardening help me stay healthy?
Event to Get Students Interest: Pink &Yellow: Walking field trip to the Path Mark on Aramingo Avenue Blue & Green: Watch a documentary on the food industry
Culminating Event: Begin garden work outside during the last week of PBL in May ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
WEEK 1 Monday 4/7: Lesson #1 Contemplating MyPlate (pgs. 43-45) ALL GROUPS 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Magazine pictures of junk food and fruits and vegetables -MyPlate graphic (will be ready for you the day of).
Tuesday 4/8: Lesson #2: Not All Vegetables are Created Equal (pgs. 46-48) ALL GROUPS 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) **Will probably use lettuce or strawberries instead of tomatoes -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Three varieties of local lettuces or strawberries from the garden and/or farmers’ market or farm stand that are different in color, size, and shape -One variety from a grocery store -Knife, cutting board, napkins, or paper plates
Thursday 4/10: Pink &Yellow: Walking field trip to the Path Mark on Aramingo Avenue Blue & Green: Watch a documentary on the food industry. You will find out which documentary next week.
WEEK 2 Monday 4/14 Pink &Yellow: Lesson # 1 Plant Diagrams and Activity Process #1 Blue & Green: Lesson #1 Plant Diagrams and Activity Process #1 & #2 -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Fruit and vegetable picture cards -Tape -“Identify Parts of the Plant We Eat” handout -“Plant Parts Diagram” handout
Tuesday 4/15: Lesson #2 Parts of the Plant Salad (pgs. 78-79) ALL GROUPS 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -A blank copy of the “Identify Parts of the Plant We Eat handout from Lesson #1 Plant Diagrams -Ingredients for “Parts of the Plant Salad Recipe” (see attached- ingredients will be given to you today) -Ingredients to make your own salad dressing (see attached- ingredients will be given to you today) -Mixing bowl, serving spoon, paper bowls, plastic forks
Wednesday 4/16: Lesson #1 What is Soil Made Of? (pgs. 109-113) ALL GROUPS 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Hand trowel or shovel -Mason jar with lid -Soil from the ground -Copies of both handouts- “What is Soil Made Of?” and “Soil Shakeup Experiment” Thursday 4/17: CLOSED

Tuesday 4/22: Lesson #1 Eat Your Colors- Activity Process #1 ALL GROUPS (pgs. 140-143) 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids

Wednesday 4/23: MS. KIM IS HERE- NO PBL TODAY
Thursday 4/24 Pink &Yellow: 1. Read a book to children 2. Activity: “Who’s Who in the Garden” and “Gardener Badge” handouts (pg. 150)
Supplies Needed: -“Who’s Who in the Garden” and “Gardener Badge” handouts (see attached) -Pencils -Crayons, markers, colored pencils
Blue & Green: Lesson #2: Garden Survivor (pgs. 144-147) 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Pictures of garden conditions (see attached) -Pencils or markers
WEEK 4 Monday 4/28 : Lesson #3 Garden on a Plate (pgs. 190-192) ALL GROUPS 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Ingredients and equipment for “Garden-On-A-Plate” recipe (see attached- ingredients will be given to you today)
Tuesday 4/29 Pink &Yellow: 1. Read a book to children 2. Do vegetable garden watercolor painting (see attached)
Supplies Needed: -Watercolor paper -Pencils -Crayons -Watercolors
Blue & Green: Lesson #1 Seed Dissection- Activity Process #1 (pgs.209-211) 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Dry beans such as black, kidney, lima, or pinto (enough for one for each student). **Beans that were soaked overnight will be given to you today** -4 sandwich-size re-sealable plastic bags -4 paper towels -Copies of the following handouts for each student: “Seeds That We Eat” “Seed Anatomy and Germination”
Thursday 5/1: Lesson #1 Water, Water, Everywhere! (pgs. 236-240) ALL GROUPS 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Ingredients and equipment for “Garden-On-A-Plate” recipe (see attached- ingredients will be given to you today)
WEEK 5 Monday 5/5: Lesson #2 To Weed or Not to Weed (pgs. 241-243) ALL GROUPS 1. Follow the lesson plan (see attached) -Go through all steps- process, introduction, engagement, activity process- with the kids
Supplies Needed: -Small paper bathroom cups (approximately 50 total)
Tuesday-Thursday 5/6-5/8: Garden Work Outside ALL GROUPS 1. Classes will go out one at a time to do garden work in the yard. A schedule will be given out for what the kids will be doing specifically.
